No. All it does is add some unbelievably detailed textures, faces, music and does nothing to the actual game-play or storyline.
Although having said that, it is like playing a different game...in a good way of course.
Oh and to the OP - best bit of HL2 is Ravenholm..!!

HL2, is a bland mix of boring weapons, dull levels and tedious set pieces.
The single most disappointing game of all time, especially considering how awesome Half Life was.

Not completed either HL, about 3/4 way through on both! As soon as Steam gets beta release on OSX I'll be back on them definitely! Great games!

. I dunno I suppose I do agree to a point, especially with what Skyfall said about the unnecessary length of the boat/car sequences..On the other hand, HL2 and its subsequent episodes really do come into their own when it came to the actual storytelling. IMHO Valve did an amazing job creating interesting, relatable characters that aren't your bog-standard set of company for the protaganist.
They then took the strengths of HL2, improved upon them and took full advantage of them in episodes 1 and 2.
So no, HL2 isnt the best game ever made, but in my view it laid a fantastic foundation in storytelling and action which Valve are making even more compelling with each episode....
Now, can we see some sign of episode 3 please?
I agree about the boat and car sequencies being too long! When I first played HL2, I kept leaving the boat when I found a bit of land, walking for a couple of minutes and then realising "Oh, I'm meant to stay on the boat"
When I've played through it since, I tend to just blast through the boat levels and just try to run over the crates for ammo etc. There's not much to see if you keep parking up.
