Win 11 was not happy, it noticed it was different hardware and no longer was my Win 11 legitimately activated any more.

However, it was from AMD to AMD motherboard and ram and CPU. Jumped through the hoops and Microsoft kindly allowed my Win 11 activation to continue.

My question though is thus ... should I have done a fresh format and clean start?

The changes were from an older Asus motherboard and 5960X and DDR4 to a newer Asus motherboard and 7950X3D and DDR5.

It seems to be working fine now after a few reboots and installing newer motherboard drivers, very stable indeed.

In the old days I would have went clean install, but sin
ce time is not on my side anymore, thought I'd try the easy option.

Hope this is OK?

Nowadays you can get away with
Not reinstalling windows
Even amd to intel
Or vice versa not likely to blue screen you

Was your windows linked to MS account?
I have changed numerous times motherboard, cpu etc
Didn't unactivate mine

It certainly noticed for me, but its all stable if not more than before now chipset driver updated ETC ... I'm going to roll with it, thanks

I always clean install just because it takes so little time, but I know it’s not always an easy option for people. I just wouldn’t want it to cause any driver conflicts or issues especially as in this instance it’s a complete platform change. But if it appears to be working OK then fair enough…!

I honestly think Win11 is quite robust and forgivable, my instinct is to format each time, but planning an RTX4090 soon too and I know that's a non essential OS format, upgrade, but for my passion a format and fresh install is not quite prime time just yet.

When I get my 4090 and soon i hope, will probably be a fresh install, but balk at the time to get me back to where I am again just now ... gEE wHIZZ

Also I am thinking ... and dreading a complete new install again, because its all so perfect still apart from newer faster hardware.

Now that I have established my new mother board CPU and ram with Microsoft, when I buy my RTX4090 soon it should be no big deal, right? Because that's just another incremental change? I hope so.

I honestly dont know how MS do the checks, is it random or what, but they for sure noticed my weekend upgrade and once I did the online check and told them honest upgrade they were fine and activated me again. so no biggie really.

Maybe they upgraded
To 11 on a pc that had windows pre installed first
Could be tied to motherboard then
OEM vs retail windows perhaps
Mine has never objected to a nice shiny new motherboard :D
Though I do sign into Microsoft account
If it makes a difference nowadays

As feedback to this, had so many dang problems, and fighting and fending them off, one by one ... even out of the blue complete shut downs ...biting the bullet now and downloading latest Win 11 64 bit pro ISO and doing a fresh install this weekend ... Yikes :(

I need to do this first to prove I don't have a hardware problem ... Its not overheating as far as i can see so far ... what a waste of time :( Its going to take ages, but if I had did this in the first place of when I posted, perhaps all would be good?

I appreciate the advice Folks, thanks, but in my case new hardware with old OS has been problematic.

Sometimes its best to just not cut corners and be a bit more thorough for peace of mind I suppose?
