This is not important as the PC is older than Miles Cyrus (well not quite) and I’m about to chuck it in the bin and get something new.

Asus mobo, Enermax 550W power, Intel Pentium 4 HT but weirdly is reported as Core 2 Duo, 4x1GB DDR2 RAM, nVidia 640, SATA HDD. Here’s what happens when I turn it on...

1) Fans spin up, lights come on for 1 second
2) Everything switches off and there is a deathly silence for another second
3) Fans spin up again but this time the HDD light stays on. Nothing else happens.
4) Have to switch to off and start again.
5) Now get the POST beep and Windows loads but doesn’t initialise the GPU properly so I get non-native display resolution.
6) Restart the PC and this time - on the 3rd attempt - everything works as it should

So anyone any idea what’s happening? I’ve tried a different HDD and step 3 still happens.

Also some capacitors could be going bad, but once warming little they start working enough.

bios battery

I like this suggestion. Normally, I switch the PC off at the power supply each night but last night I left it on. And this morning, the system booted up cleanly on the first attempt. So it wouldn't have been using the CMOS battery.
