I remember days of when I used to look forward to new movies coming out and anticipating " screener leak " season.
Today though I'm just not that enthused about any new upcoming releases and feeling like something has been lost.
Is it just myself getting old?

Streaming services have changed the landscape and there is less anticipation, also so much attention is split across however many media channels.

For me I listen to podcasts (mainly The Big Picture) and they talk about stuff months if not up to a year before things come out.

At the moment I'm looking forward to The Brutalist. Also A Real Pain.

I recently saw Anora after hearing about it for at least 4 months (excellent) and Conclave (not as good as I thought it was going to be)

But it does whet the whistle I find for all sorts of movies big and small

Yes, but also no.

I'm sure there's probably an appropriate saying, but anyway, too much choice is not always a good thing.

Saturation of a market often equals devaluing (more media, and more accessible in this case). Then pair that with businesses who have big business attitudes of growth, then you have a double wammy of negatives.

It's happening to everything sadly, sports even.

Companies have been milking original IP for as long popular IP existed, generally speaking. How old is The Terminator?

Maybe, it's even just the simple case of no ideas are left to be done?
Or the more sinister outlook could just be creatives find it too difficult or oppressive to enter the market of media now for the various but obvious reasons.

There's still great stuff out there, but you need to actively look.

I think it's more because everything is so available now. There is no anticipation for anything because you already see it everywhere, know the plot and have seen a trailer with all the good bits.

There is also just so much to watch now, it all starts getting a bit overwhelming. You don't really have anything to look forward to, because you're trying to pile through the list of films and TV series you've already got lined up!

Think it's this, back in the day you'd get a little trailer at the cinema and then see the posters and maybe get a little sneak peak on the saturday lunchtime movie show on ITV or some making of aspect a little bit after it's been released but before it came out on video, now I rarely watch trailers because they often give so much away and you have to work hard to avoid major spoilers on social media etc.

The issue is, film genre A, which has been thought out and has a story get made and does well at the box office

So hollywood jumps onboard and starts making films like film A, plus the original film makers make film A 2 and film A 3, etc etc.. Except in their rush to jump on the money train, the story gets forgotten and the films are rushed.. Public gets bored after the 3rd Film A..

film Genre B, which has been thought out and has a story get made and does well at the box office... I think you can guess the rest..

there are still gems of films, with superb story, but they rarely do well in terms of making lots of money..

I've all very depressing..

I guess the future is TV series.. where a story can be told properly, and not as much risk.. although I get the feeling some TV series have done well and have gone onto create a season 2, when there was no original intention of a season 2... and the story then doesn't fit properly..

that is because everything has been done to death and major advancements in film making dont really happen now like in the past
Yeah, there don't seem to be many "new stories" coming along and Hollywood seems to just be re-making a lot of existing films at the moment.

Executives have always been like this.

They only know what the last big movie was, so comission more of that. They usually don't know why it was a success (and neither do most people)

6 of one, half dozen of the other. It's certainly possibly you're maturing and becoming more discerning in what you enjoy, but it doesn't help that in general the quality of what's coming out is declining too; Film for me used to be exciting because they were mini magic tricks - you'd get someone like Greg Nicotero or Stan Winston create something truly awesome (and practical) for the theatre screen and I'd love marvelling at the ingenuity that would go into making that scene. It's one of the big reasons I loved Jurrasic Park.

You used to have people that could write a compelling story - but now the best you can hope for god help us, is someone who did a couple of half decent episodes on game of thrones getting pulled to write something theatrical.

However, it's all become CGI soup, and as a result Hollywood has become little more than a sweatshop, with people sat in front of banks of computers trying to keep up with the demands on the studio and their timetables.
