Just picked up a Asus 280GTX with Farcry2 bundled for only £*** brand new.... what a bargain... i was going to get a 4870 X2 but at that price for the GTX its a better buy.

Anyway i have a 8800GT 512mb and was wondering if i could run this along side the GTX for Physx ? I have a Asus P5Q-E Intel P45 (Socket 775) and was wondering if would all work fine.

Cheers

Would bother tbh, if the 8800GT does give you aditional PhysX power, it's not going to be a lot.

+1

done that and tried it. although the demos from Nvidia seam ok, there is nothing really that interesting for using it.

8800GT is plenty powerful enough for physics - however with any current generation game that does happen to take advantage of physx + GPU the 280GTX is fast enough to handle both with no additional boost from switching physics to a second GPU... however when games come out that do use physx more extensively the 8800GT could be useful.

I wouldn't keep the 8800GT back just on the fact that it might be useful for physx tho as by the time that happens you could prolly pickup another GPU just as powerful as the 8800GT for under £30.

Sell the GT and buy yourself something nice, like a coat. You should get a good price on an auction site, and you can always buy one back later if you find you need it for physx, but I suspect you wont.

145-150w everywhere I have seen at idle, and around 210w under load and those are stock speeds for those who like to tweak further

Edit: For example

Notice title of the graph, system power consumption;)

Keep the 8800GT anyway for when games do use physx :p

All the results I have seen with an Ultra and 8800GT shows the Ultra is faster on it's own so with the GTX280 it will be even more so.

It may well improve as the drivers improve but at the moment you may as well seel the 8800GT
