I have a X2 3800 at the moment clocked to 2.6ghz 1.1 with my ram. Would it be worth upgrading to a 4400 or 4800?

I have the 4800x2. I bought this as I am an OC noob. But seeming I have learnt so much off this forum as well as others I know how to OC.

I bought the chip quite a few months back before I joined this forum.

Personally if I were you i would stick with what you got.

If you can hit 2.6-2.8 then you are laughing. As you would have a chip more than than equal.

I can get my 4800x2 to 2.85ghz on air cooling for suicide runs. But I need to pump in serious voltage which therefore means it runs hot.

But for everyday usage I leave it at 2.7 to 2.8 depending on ambient temperature.

I don't think it finacially worth it and if you play games all the time then you wouldn;t necessarily see an improvement if you had your 3800x2 clocked up.

With hindsight if I had found this forum first I would have got a 3800x2.

The one thing I will admit is that the toledo core can really take some abuse. In an effort to get it past or equal to 2.9 ghz I have set the voltage to like 1.65v and maybe a slightly higher. It of course then decides to play up so I just clock it down and run it as normal. It always worked fine.

If I had maybe something like a dfi board and better ram then maybe I might be able to get to 2.9 but there wouldn't be a WOW difference to when I am running it normally. And it would only have small effect on benchies.

unfortunately X2 4400 and 4800 both overclock very poorly

my 4400+ is running at 2.7ghz now on 1.44v, people are putting a lot more voltage through them for higher results, does this constitue a poor overclock?

p.s. do you actually own one?

IMO no. You won't get much faster o/c either of those chips, despite the increased cache.

Increased cache can actually be a hindrance to overclocking, sometimes same versions of a cpu with less cache (Celeron for example) overclock much higher on average than their bigger brothers.
