just got a puppy :D

We had a MASSIVE cage for our German Shepard when we first got his as a pup. The door was always left open and the cage took up most of the living room. He used to go in there when he wanted to sleep or just get away from everyone being a little loud now and then. It's well know that almost all animals enjoy a dark secluded spot to hide away in at times.
So many people here throwing things around saying this guy is mistreating his dog and locking it away.
Here is a picture of the cage, I assume the OP has one that's nice and big for his dog.

As far as cages go of course it would be wrong to use a cage for a long period of time but apart from that Dogs Love cages & here's why.
When a dog has a cage in the house the cage is His, There is only one way into the cage & one way out & Dogs like this for security.
I had a cage in the house from when Frank was a pup & it was handy to have somewhere I could put him when I was cooking or when babys came round etc
As time went on I never needed to lock him in the cage & just left it there as a bed/home for him but I noticed when he is threatened like a big thunder storm or Fireworks month
mad he used to go into his cage & chill.
I spoke to a dog behavior person & she told me about the security & how her dogs are the same & still go in there cages even though just like me she hasn't put the door down for years.
Franks 10 now & the cage is folded up out back but it's there if he or I need it.
I should also add that Franks cage is Massive & there is enough floor space for 4 of him to lay down/fully stand up etc
The exception to the above rule would be keeping a big dog in one of these small cheap cages for a long period of time. I would not & have Never left Frank in his cage for more than a couple of hours. When I'm out he's Free range & cruises the whole house.

When my parents got their lablador, she was crying whenever they left her alone. Sometimes it was dragging on for 1h-1.5h.
My dad built her a kennel, so she's not in the house when they are at work, she has a lot of space there and her own little 'garden' to run around and use as toilet. She still cries a little when she's locked, but she knows it's her place and she has all the toys, basket, pillows, blankets, food and water in there. When she's locked she usually walks around a little, then she lays down or bites on one of the toys. She knows that as soon as my parents come back from work she will be let out and then can play with everyone, run around garden and the house.
My parents also lock her in the kennel whenever they go shopping or sometimes when they have some work to do around the house (for some reason she loves to bite cleaning brush).
I think it's a matter of time before your lablador settles down and get used to everything. He's just really sad when you leave him alone.
For weeing and pooing in the house problem, there are some mats you can buy and teach him to use that as a toilet and also some sprays 'Puppy Aid' I think they are called. These two worked great for my parents and their lablador.

We really did try to crate train our dog from when he was a pup, but he was having absolutely none of it. Used to howl the place down endlessly when put in there even though we tried so much. Ended up just having to pack it in and get him a normal bed.
Now he's a bit older and calmer he just slinks off to bed when he wants to get away.

aye well i am doing good so far (well i think so haha )...he has the odd pee in the house but goes outside for a poo so tht aint bad. still crying in the cage but not as much now i dnt think he likes it cos he dont go in there on his own he rather sit near the couch. i will try and get some pics on tonight when i finish work but i aint done it before so go knows how it will turn out haha.

just read through the past few pages and a lot of people have mixed feelings about cages. funny thing is that everyone that i have sopken to including vets asked if i was caging him (doogle is his name) and its a good idea. at most he is alone for 3-4 hours untill the other half gets in from work but then has the house to run around etc. we not using it as punishment mainly for house training. we dont have a garden to give him a kennel just a small back yard for toileting really.
he is well looked after and i am going to try the blanket over the cage to help that seems a really good idea. i leave the door open during the day the only time he goes in is for sumit to eat/drink.
i can see where other people are coming from and it can be used in the wrong way, the cage is a XL cage i will put a pic on with him in etc dont u guys worry haha

I would get a dog, but im more of a cat person my self.
My bros springer did nothing but cry when left alone he ended up getting it some teddy and was fine he then got a lab cross with something (doesn't actually know) and had to cage that when out otherwise shed rip the place apart.
She ended up biting the cage and ripping a hole in it quite shockingly but shes chilled out now.

question for puppy owners, my next doors puppy growls and sticks half his head out from under the gate when we walk past, will a doggie biscuit make it friendly ?
Or next door neighbors make the puppy live outside 24/7, its never in the house also...
seems to be playing on its own with a teddy and ragdoll most of the time or chasing the birds or cats... other times its just crying on its own

Stick with the cage for a few more weeks, I Used a cage for the first few months when I got my dog. I thought it was cruel and felt terrible at first, but it's for their own safety, my dog chewed at everything when he was a pup.
