Just picked up Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Before I rush in and play, whats a fun race\character to play? Anything I should know or any tips for a first timer?

Cheers

Save before you get to the end of the sewers so if you ever want to change character just go back to that save. Saves you having to do the very beginning annoying part again. :)

I started new after reading the Mods you can get for it on these forums.

started a spellblade :D Magic, Plate armour, Swords :D pritty cool class

Firstly, get a load of mods and stuff, and for a good allarounder, definatly go for a Nord Or Imperial, Sneaky/Thief go for a Kahjit (even though my imperial does both).

Yep, Good advice. Just when you get to a long tunnel with light at the end (and it asks you to confirm your choices) save it.

Hmm Kinda torn between a sneaky thief\assasin type character or an all out damage dealing mage type character.

Do the first one and be a Dark Elf, they kick ass. Do read the oblivioni tips section posted somewhere in this forum, contains loads of really useful links

I think you should have fun deciding for yourself, but I have always loved playing a Dark Elf theif/assasian tye character, which is best suited for the Dark Brotherhood quests, which are some of the best in the game.

i no this is off topic, but i would just like to say i made my Character drink 40 skoomas and go on a murderous, yet extremely HIGH rampage.

the best character to choose is one with whom you identify with and will play as if it were you in the realm of Cyrodill.

i'll not add anymore cos there's a weeks worth of reading and links here -
my Oblivion topic

hint, read the tweakguide and UESPwiki first. after that you should know as much as anyone here ;)

Thanks all for the help, I settled with a Wood Elf, Who's Starsign is 'Thief' and has a custom build of all the stealthy abilities.

Thanks for the tip about saving before leaving the sewers ;)

I dont know what your specs are, but there is a mod and tweak that lowers grass performance hits, making the outside FPS much better, i had to do it on my 7800GS agp, and it made it much faster without actually making the grass look crappy, highly reccomend it.

Also, if you happen to get bored theres a mod called Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul(sp?) aka OOO, which adds new stuff to the gameplay and world of Oblivion.

The distant lods look crappy, aparently the latest official patch makes them better but as i killed my hdd and dvdrw, and im on a backup hdd, i cant install oblivion to find out! There are texture packs also that enahance the graphics indoors and outdoors...but these can bring even 8800 series to their knees at times.

The console is quite fun for playing around...but ive messed my game by using it a few times....but its handy because you can edit your race and sign and job with the console after leaving the sewers, which is v handy.

Lastly, if you went theif/assasin type, definately join the Dark Brotherhood when you get the chance, they have my most favourite missions!

Quicksaving is fine, but if you quicksave during dungeons and really hard areas. I reccomend using normal saves. I learnt that the hard way, went inside a portal had to "do something", realised I wasn't fast enough and every time I reloaded I couldn't do it and the only way to continue with the game was to cheat and fly to where I wanted.

Oh, and avoid at all costs turning into a vampire. If you like to cheat, then no problem. If you don't cheat, have fun being a vampire for ages (you only can become a vampire once in the whole game which is why it's so hard to find a cure)

Finally, do NOT kill shopkeepers, no matter how much you want the item they have in stock.
