Just got my first macbook pro!

It depends what kind of user you are. If you're not particularly bothered about the OS just start using it in a task-based way i.e. create a document, run a backup, install Firefox and if you hit any roadblocks start Googling or ask on here.
I on the other hand like to go a bit deeper and bought a book on OS X with my first Mac which was well worth the £20 or so. There is nothing in there that you wouldn't find out yourself with enough usage, but you'll do it faster when you've got an overview and someone connects the dots for you.
If you are coming from Windows, there are specific guides out there to have a read of in the meantime. The official stuff from Apple is a good start:

Nice one. It's a very easy OS to get the basics of, but the deeper you delve, the more it'll reward you. Make sure you have a good play before you start using it at Uni. If you're a gonna be doing a pretty hardcore degree, I can recommend a little program called Things, just to keep you sane. I've got it doing everything from keeping track of assignments to telling me when library books are due!

Yeh I know although I the reason for it is my course although has a lot of comptuer sciences involved has an awful lot of design. We will be doing our "basics" in processing (language) then actually trying to do some rather complex stuff in games engines as well, there is also a lot of musical engineering in the course too, so it's a bit of mixed matched course I just couldn't sit down and do a computer science course I felt I needed a more hands on approach being able to actually see my designs come to life. After this course is done I will be going to do something to do with communications and try for the intelligence services as a comm's operator

I picked up a few of the apps off this forum which are suggested by some members, must say some of the text editor apps for web development are quite smooth too, I do like the whole install / uninstall of applications on mac now =D
