Just got new PSU - how does it work?

Been a while since i got new psu. Corsair hx750. Took it out the box and plug it in but the fan dont spin? Just makes a low, very low hissing noise. Is that right? Does it only work (fan spins) when plugged in to matherboard? ta
 
So you're saying no cables are plugged into the motherboard/components. Just that it's plugged into the wall? If that's the case then no it shouldn't work. You need the 20pin and 8pin connections connected to the motherboard before it will at least show some life.

uff thats right just plugged in to the wall. I can hear it though muffled hissing voice like when you whisper something very intimate to a beautiful women on your first date at the movies.
 
Could always do the paper clip test to test the fan to see if its working.

You won't see it fully working until you plug into the motherboard.
 
Watch some video's of how to system build - you want to have a good idea of what you're doing in what order before everything comes.
 
Order I do it:

PSU into case along with any optical drives/hard drives

Then outside of case:

CPU into motherboard
Thermal compound onto CPU
Attach heatsink and fan to CPU/board and plug the fan wire in
Plug in RAM
Screw motherboard into case
Plug in graphics card
Attach PSU cables to the graphics card, motherboard, optical drive and hard drives
Attach case cables to motherboard

Because I was planning to do a budget upgrade and bought the CPU, motherboard and RAM to do this (keeping my PSU, monitor, graphics card and hard drives etc) and then I changed my mind and upgraded everything except the PSU lol.

Board is fine unless I want to go SLI in which case I'll need to upgrade. But we'll cross that bridge if/when I get there :)

Follow this. It's pretty much a standard method for everyone.

Pretty sure that wouldn't have happened. IIRC the 8pin or 20(+4)pin connectors from the motherboard send a signal to the PSU to power it up. If it's not connected, no signal is sent thus the PSU doesn't start.
 
Slight edit that if your CPU cooler requires a backplate to be fitted, attach the backplate before you apply the thermal compound.

Nah you won't do any damage to it. It's just nothing is drawing any power from it so it won't spin on.

Actually, I was once reliably informed that powering up a PSU without it being plugged into anything was a very bad idea! The fact it's making strange noises would seem to confirm this.
