Ok, first off, sorry for another post on (relatively) the same topic, but i've searched through the various other Obliv. threads, and i'm still kinda in the dark.

Mods. Which do i need to get in terms of graphical changes etc?

im using an E6600, 2Gb RAM, x1900xt - should i bother? or can i just max em out?

re: the leveling/charachter building system:

what exactly is so bad about it? I have only played 1/2 hour ish and havn't bothered to save my game yet (just wanted to get out of the sewers and see the outside /drool), but i did play morrowind, though i suppose i dont have much else to compare it to.

mods + K.O.T.N:

if i do install various gameplay/graphical mods, when i get around to picking up the expansion, will i just be able to carry on as i have been playing, or will it mess around with my save files etc?

cheers in advance

My advise would be to play it without any mods at first and see what you think

I'm not a hardened RPG player by any means and I really liked the game without any mods. I liked the levelling system!

As for the graphics - I'd just max them out as it will look stunning. Some of the graphical mods make the game look fake and overly vivid IMO

ok, i'll get started on it (woot - been waiting since release XD). two more questions though:

If i start playing now, with no mods whatsoever, then at some point i decide i want to install some, be they graphical or gameplay altering - will i need to restart the game/will my saves be lost?

Also, and one thing thats been in my mind for a while now: at what point do mods go from 'gameplay enchancers' to 'cheats'. I've seen a lot of nice mods listed that give graphical improvements (not that they seem to be needed), and i suppose stuff like 'No psycic guards' would be something you'd expect to be in the game, rather than an alteration to it. But stuff that changes the leveling system/damage dealt etc..?

It seems to me that mods like these would make the game easier, or at least, change it from how it was initially meant to be played.

@ users of such mods: do you feel you are 'cheating'? Or is it solely a gameplay enchancement?

Hi

Not sure - I wouldn't have thought that the graphical mods would mean that you have to restart. Not sure about the gameplay mods though - I haven't installed them personally as I felt that the game was really rather good without any mods

The only addons I've installed have been the official ones from the Oblivion website and these haven't affected my savegames

One thing thats worth doing is saving before you exit the sewers.
There is an iron gate you come to and you can see daylight at the other end.
When you go to open the gate it gives you a final chance to setup your character.
Save the game before you try to open the gate.
This means if you want to restart you don't have to do all the sewers stuff again

The vast majority of mods don't require you to restart the game.

Make sure you pick a class that really fits how you're going to play; you'll progress really slowly if you're advancing in skills that aren't your major skills, since the only way you level-up is by advancing major skills.

Congrats on your purchase, i actually recently finished this game, well ic ant find anymore quests anyway, lol, loved this game through and through, hope you enjoy it aswell.

Oblivion is an amazing game tbh. I mean theres so much in it to keep it lasting for a long time. I have to start again because I lost my saves due to Windows taking a dump but I don't really mind too much since its a great game. Ordered Knights of the Nine so I'll install that since im still at the begining.

"Knights of the Nine features an all-new faction and quests for noble characters and answers many of the questions surrounding the Ayleid ruins found throughout Oblivion. Players can join a new faction and found their own order of holy knights - leading them into battle against a sorcerer-king and his demonic minions while exploring massive dungeons and searching for legendary relics - the holy armor and weapons of the Divine Crusader."
