Ok just bought Stalker...... I LOVE IT

But my two 7900 GS in SLi ain't really up to the test, i think.
Is this game GPU intensive ?!?!?

Dual core 5200+ AM2 ( running at 2.9 )
7900 GS SLi ( running 606 core and 788 memory )
Asus Full 16x 16x SLI board ( can't remmeber the name )
2 Gig of memory running 5-5-13-T2

10 x 7 just with the standard settings on, not even tweaked the game graphics, just tryed to OC the cards more before i drop the res down.

Need to get a 8800 really, what with Vista getting DX10, they always do this, new things only on the new OS, to force every one to upgrade.

Dynamic lighting hits hard.

When i first got stalker i could run it with everything except dynamic lighting at full on my rig at the time. The spec was 22" belinea (1680x1050), 2gb ram, opty 165 @ 2.8ghz and a 7950gx2 (basically what you have) @ 600/830.

Had no problems - got a steady 50fps out of it with the occassional peak of 90 and trough of 40.

Everybody bought (well nearly everybody) the 8800GTX for unbelievable DX9 performances. DX10 cards will get better and better at DX10 as they plod along and solidify it's stability in newer ATI/Nvidia models.

Also buying the GTX might be a sore move in the DX10 market. The 8800GTX can't do DX10.1 and I'm not too clear if this will be implemented into games in the future so you could be buying something that isn't what you want to futureproof your system a little bit better. These cards will hopefully surface around the November period but could be next year February also. No solid information (or I've missed it).

Hold out for a little while if you can. You have a powerful set up still. The 8800GTX would improve things for you no doubt but if you waited and just had to mess around with the settings for a few months more then I think that would be a better option than get an amazing card so late on (9 - 10 months now). It's up to you, I can only give you my recommendation.

Good luck. :D

My 8800GTS 320mb isn't cutting it at 1280x1024, let alone the 1680x1050 native res my monitor runs at. You are going to have to aim high for Stalker.

You may have to drop your texture settings as the 320mb 8800 tends to run into problems when high res bitmaps (like the ultra settings in Doom 3) are used in games.

i think i might see i can connect my GPU fans to a 14 volt rail that should make for a faster fan speed and more cooling, more speed ?!?!

I think after reading that 10.1 thing i might hold off on spending 500+ quid on a card that can't really do DX 10 with all the bells and bits..

Will the 8900 do dx10.1 ?? cause that should push the price down

I'll trying turning off the dynamic lighting aswell

Now is there a 14 volt rail in a PC ?!?!

LOL

Yes the next card (9800GTX speculation name) is going to have DX10.1 and from speculative specifications it's been shown to have double the power of the 8800GTX  .

Lets hope that's true  .

If you can hold out (drop dynamic lighting in Stalker also Shadows usually take a good performance hit in games) then I'd do it. You have a great system now that will play just about anything. If that means dropping a few settings to get it playable and looking still great in newer titles?, would you do it?. If it's yes then I'd definitely wait it out.

If you were a serious gamer and had a low graphics card then I'd tell you to go and get the GTX right now as it would turn your life upside down. You, on the other hand have got near 7950GX2 speed which is probably in line with a 8800GTX in SLi enabled games. I think this is plenty to do you until the next release. Yes, you will have to maybe drop a setting or two in some newer games but you will still have fun while Nvidia work on your upcoming monster.

thats odd - with my set up (sig bellow) i get a sold 30 - 80 fps with all settings on max in stalker..... not kidding. Im overclocked but still. Praps i just got a good card?

Im running ah a decent res too - cant remember what - and no sarcastic jokes please.

one of them is a value one off OC and the others is a normal 7900 gs ( what ever that is, with a zimman cooler )

The 8950 sounds like a wet dream !! think i'm gonna get me two of them, water cool them, then do a porno shoot with them !!!

If they look any thing like the 8800's with a water cooler on them then oooooooooooo

well with my 2 2600xt's, everything on max, 1680x1050, with dynamic lighting at full. i get:

2007-08-15 15:09:45 - XR_3DA
Frames: 3609 - Time: 120000ms - Avg: 30.075 - Min: 26 - Max: 86

The float32 mod helps with performance, ive got version 1.7077a on and it runs great in 1280x1024 full dynamic lighting with everything maxed, i get about 50-60fps (v-sync on), i did try the latest version of the mod last night, but it ran terrible on that one for some reason, must have been about 20fps or less in some places so i dropped it back to the 1.7077a.

On the bench tests i get about 107fps average on the buildings one, and about 100fps average on the short one.
