One thing to bear in mind is that in the early part of the game ammo is quite scarce from memory, so if you choose to beef up combat skills it may be best to go for melee. I think the above is a common 'flaw' with a lot of RPG games, if you completely ignore combat skills (whether they be ranged, melee or magic) then no matter how good your other skills are, sooner or later you will end up in a fight. Whereas if you focus on combat skills you can pretty much always fight your way out of trouble, even if you have to fight more often and in more difficult fights than you might otherwise.
Regarding the cost on Steam, yes £15 is ridiculous (probably get away with it because it is rare) although I have very occasionally seen it at 50% off. For some unknown reason it gets overlooked in the big sales, I reckon if they slashed the price to a fiver they could shift a lot of units.
The good news is with the unofficial patch it runs well and looks pretty decent for a 2004 game as well.
