Hi,

I am having to return my mobo, and therefore have had to remove the cpu. I notice that there is some grey pasty stuff on the copper conductor of the CPU fan and on the top of the CPU. I guess this is cooling gel or whatever. I certainly did not put any on in the first instance so I guess this oozed from somewhere as part of the install. Should I just leave it until I reinstall the CPU or clean it or what? My gut feeling is to leave it - I have packed it all safely away in the original packaging with the CPU with its special plastic cap.

It is an Intel Q6600 Quad Core CPU and Fan.

And yes I am a newcomer at this building stuff. I built the whole unit only to find that the mobo supports 4* single sided memory and I need the 4*DS slots.

Thanks in advance,

Sam

its most likely the thermal paste from the heatsink. if its the stock cooler, it came pre-applied. i would suggest you order some new thermal paste clean the old stuff your CPU before you put your pc back together

jak731,

Thanks for this. Yes it is the stock cooler/cpu and yes it was pre-applied.

I am very cautious. What is the best way to clean it off and reapply without damaging the CPU?

Thanks again,

Sam

I personally use Artic Silver 5 kit which comes with a cleaning agent which I wipe off the old the old paste with and then use lint free paper such as a coffee filter with the bottle of purifier and then apply the AS5 as per instructions on there web site. Try googling the kit for more info. I'm sure ocuk sell the kit.

Hi i personaly use this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TH-001-AR&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=27 as its non-conductive , it seems to keep my temps as low if not lower than artic silver 5.
For ease of cleaning this will do the job just fine http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=OA-001-AK&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=27 just wipe off the cpu and cooler with this on a cloth then re-apply paste when needed.
when you apply paste you need only blob the size of a grain of rice in the center of the cpu then fix the cooler to it . Some ppl have different ways of applying the paste but this to me is the easiest.
hope this helps

I take it thermal paste such as artic silver 5 or Arctic Cooling MX-2 will be much better than the pre-applied paste you get on intel stock coolers???

No need to bother with fancy cleaning stuff.

Order some Isopropyl from a chemist if you can find the small bottles, or use some plain non perfumed nail varnish remover. Rub the thick off with some kitchen roll. Cover the top of the bottle with another folded piece of kitchen roll and tip it over to put a dash on the roll. Rub with this and repeat until cleaned.

Then apply some new paste of choice as per instructions (taking a view that less is more).
