The colour change on a 24" TN panel? I mean if im sitting about 4 foot from it, am i likely to notice anything, assuming i dont wobble my head around a lot? :)

I also heard something about pva panels having a similar issue for side to side movement? Or is that not true?

I guess I would like an IPS panel, at least from reading around that seems to be the way to go but I dont have a lot of time before I need to buy and I cant find a 24" one for around 450 or less, unless hazro are likely to sort things out in the next 3 weeks or so.. which given my luck aint likely ;)

I found this thread on anandtech, which has a bunch of monitor recommendations based on use, and they mainly recommend TN panels there.. Here is the thread

Looking through it the best ranked one available in the uk is BenQ G2400WD..

You will notice the colour shift, it's impossible to keep your head completely still over a period of time. It's mainly the vertical viewing angles that are the problem. For instance the blue background on this forum will be noticeably darker at the top versus the bottom of the screen on a TN, and that's even with your head still and in the optimal position.

Yes there's a problem on MVA and PVA where near dark detail can vary by moving or turning your head a little. In the grand scheme of thing I'd have to call it a minor issue (certainly compared to vertical viewing angles on a TN) and many people will never notice it, but it is there. IPS isn't perfect either, but it has the least viewing angle problems.

On my 24" TN panel, the relatively limited (versus other panels) horizontal viewing angle is much more noticeable than than the relatively limited vertical one (having a fully adjustable stand a three foot working distance helps). The colour change can be quite severe (whites turn yellow/gray) if you look directly at one side of the screen (i.e. sit in front of one side instead of the middle) and just move your eyes to look at the other edge of the screen, but it isn't as bad if you turn your head and look directly at the other side of the screen.

For that kind of money (i.e. not in the £250-300 bracket), you should be able to find something that is a good all-rounder.

Btw, it would nice if all online retailers told you which type of panel that every monitor uses...

(this won't help for gaming/movies, but if you want to do lots of colour critical work [photoshop etc.] but if you can't afford a professional LCD/TFT, you can still get a decent CRT monitor for next to nothing and use it alongside your LCD/TFT for colour reference)
