Just how easy is it to Overclock?

Hi Guys,

I'm going to be doing my first ever build at some point and just wanted to ask the question: How easy is it to Overclock?

The reason being is that I am being given specs (look at Hardware thread) and basically being told its cheaper and better for me to do it myself. This is because it allows me to spend more money on better components elsewhere.

I'm a bit worried about doing it myself and then ending up doing it wrong and causing damage. If the build was for me I would just shrug my shoulders and give it a go but its going to be for my cousin so I am being a little bit more cautious. Any advice (or man up comments) is greatly appreciated.

Thank You

tbh there's so many guides and help available online, particularly here ;), that it would be quite hard to damage your components. As long as you stick with safe voltages and provide adequate cooling, you can't go wrong really. Whether or not you manage to attain a decent overclock depends on your patience and the good ol' silicone lottery. You'll learn a lot and hopefully have fun doing so.

Word of caution: It's goddamn addictive :D

Tbh I just wouldn't know where to start. The thought of it is quite daunting in itself especially the fact I literally know nothing, I'm all up for learning but I would rather learn from seeing others do rather than doing it myself especially with the fact I will be breaking my OC Virginity.

I had never attempted to overclock until I upgraded to my 4770k in November. I read a few guides and asked for advice on here and eventually ended up stable at 4.5 GHz. I could probably get it higher but for the amount of time it would take to get 4.6/4.7 stable I don't think the increase is worth it.

Read some guides so you know what to do and what to avoid doing. Don't rush it and make sure you test for stability. Be prepared to spend a couple of days working on getting a decent stable overclock (unless you have better luck than me of course lol).

In addition to the capabilities of the actual cpu (which is pot luck) some ranges of cpu overclock better than others.

My system is getting on a bit now but was an absolute breeze to overclock, so was my Q6600 before that and my E6300 before that. The latest couple of generations of Intel chips don't offer the same gains as easily.

I'm going to stick with what I have and crank it up accordingly (with better cooling) while I bide my time, hoping another cracking cpu comes out which the overclockers start raving about, then I'll upgrade :)

Overclocking isnt difficult in itself..
Its just time consuming, and you need to be patient..
Anyone can clock the numbers up, But the pateince comes into stability testing..
Once i am happy that i have squeezed out every drop of extra performance, i stress test for 12 hours, to give it the 1000% stable rating in my mind.

And as mentioned, there are plenty of tutorials across the net..
