Just how quiet can you make a decent PC, without water?

I'm thinking about replacing my HTPC with a higher spec system. It would still be HTPC but also a gaming rig.

The HTPC is almost silent and is on 24/7 and while I don't mind turning it off when not in use I wont be able to stand it if its humming away while I'm watching a film.

Anyone managed a near silent gaming rig on air?

Yeah, you can get one that's inaudible.

Careful selection of processor and graphics card, and a decent power supply will do it. I believe you'll want to go for an ATI Graphics card. They had some new cards come out in Q3/Q4 this year that had a low TDP footprint. There's some dual cores from both AMD and Intel that have low TDPs.

Those should allow you to run big fat coolers with big fans running slow.

My PC is pretty much silent.

I'm using 3 X Scythe Slipstream 120mm fans (1200RPM) one of them is on my Thermalright Ultra 120 CPU cooler and they are all attached to a Scythe Kaze Master ACE fan controller.
My EVGA GTX260 is silent when idle and so is my Enermax Modu82+ 625W.
I can only hear slight HDD noise from my Western Digital Caviar Blue 640GB with the fans on low.
