I've just seen a decent deal on a set an AKG K612 and seeing them ranked so positively I put an order in. I plan on running it from this amp: Link . My limited understanding on the subject tells me that my DAC+AMP will be sufficient. I'll be upgrading from the Hyper X Cloud 2 and that is currently being driven by the same DAC+AMP.

Can anyone foresee any issues here and will the upgrade be substantial? I've read the the K612s can be uncomfortable to wear - is that the case?

You shouldn't have any issues, the amp should be able to drive them just fine. As for comfort, if the headband is flat you should be fine - some K702's had what can only be referred to as "torture bumps" on the underside and if the K612 has those (I don't think it does) then all bets are off :D

Thanks. I've read good things about this headset and it will be my first open variant so looking forward to hearing the difference.

While not up to absolute top level in details because of some above neutral bass, K612 itself is very capable for gaming.

But for gaming immersion question is also about signal.
If it's standard stereo speaker mix from game, you don't even have proper left-right immersion.
Only very artificial "sound inside left/right ear or in center of the head" immersion.
Because with headphones there's no natural propagation of sounds of left side sources to right ear and vice versa.
Compare these two:

No matter how expensive and/or glazed with audiofoolery, headphones can never create binaural cues brain uses for positioning of sounds:
We hear in 3D with two ears, because head and pinnae cause direction dependant changes to signal received by both ears from sound source.
Ability to mimic those cues is feature DACs lack as dumb single purpose devices.
Whole DAC hype has been basically selling less features and functions as more.
Though at least that SMSL is well priced.

For comfort AKG has given up on those headband torture bumps years ago and flat headband should be good for hours and hours of continuous use.
Though few months ago read one person finding even flat leather headband inconmfortable.
I guess he had "pointy" top of the head.
Also with "automatic" adjustment of headband, if you have big head or small head it doesn't work as well.
With smaller head, especially downward narrowing, it could easily feel that ear cups try to slip constantly down.
That's because their position keeping relies on pressure on head.

I have Q701 with torture bumps. I ordered a knitted cover from aliexpress for like £1 problem solved. did take 3 weeks to arrive.

now i just need to deal with the creaks from plastic rubbing on plastic. i've got carboard n there just now but i want a permanent and neat solution.

I've had these for a few days now and they seem perfectly comfortable over long periods of usage.

On the sound front, very different to my old closed headset obviously. Switching between the two, the predecessor (Cloud) has more bass and impact but these new ones seem very detailed and remain clear at max volume where the Cloud's are reduced to a boomy, painful mess.

That is what I usually suffer with all headphones.
