Right i have a sapphire X1950 pro......and that thing ran uber hot !!!.

so i got me one of these:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SY-002-AR&tool=3

So its all installed all works temps have gone down big time:

before: idle - 49oc load - 65oc
now: idle 32oc load - 49oc

Right what im worried about is the paste on the cooler that touches the gpu ram i think. It had some paste on it and my dad for some reason thought it was plastic and touched abit off !!!!!!!!!!!

So i smoothed it all over with my fingers very carefully so it was back to how it first was.

What i want to know is will this affect my GPU like kill it or something ???

my dad only took a little bit off and tried to put it back as best as possible. I mean it all works but has my dad just killed my card and have i got any think to worry about ? :(

Do you mean he took some of the paste off, and you re-spread it? If so, you've nothing to worry about. If the card's working fine, then it should be ok.

yea he didnt even take all the past off it was like a very small bit about 10%. and i re spreaded it. U sure it will be fine sine i just got my card back from RMA and that took 10 weeks so i dont wanna wait another 10 or more :(

thanks for the reply tho

It should be fine, but for future reference you shouldn't use your finger as that will have natural oils on it which will hinder the performance of the thermal compound.
I usually wrap my finger in a bit of clingfilm and use that to spread it evenly. Others use plastic cards or similar.

But like I said at the start, it will be fine and the difference will be minimal so I wouldn't worry about it for this time.
You've knocked 16/17 degrees off your temps, and a little finger print may add 1 degree back on, so your still looking good.

Plus if you start using Arctic Silver ,you don't want to get it on your fingers as it can get every where :p

If it wasn't the gpu paste that got messed up, then you've nothing to worry about. The ram cooling isn't 'critical' like the GPU, so your card won't die, even if there's no contact at all.

If you're really worried, then you can buy thermal pads (shinetsu) and cut to size.

Just don't let your dad near anything technical again (belonging to you). :D.

well ive been out all day and left the pc on temps are still low and nothings blown up :D ...................so it seems fine. Thanks for all the advice.

With the stock cooler on my X1800XT it ran at 60 idle/80+load depending on the game/bench i was running
