Just Installed F@H :D

Hey all

Been reading through this section of the forum a lot recently, and decided to get into F@H. :)

Just finished reading the extremely helpful setup guide. Thanks to all who contributed to that especially BillyTheImpaler, got me well underway.

Im signed up as -[OcUK]-Xplo and of course for Team10!

Anyways just got setup and I *think* im folding? :D



Doesn't Look like its doing much lol but am I actually folding or what?!

Lol now just got few questions

- In the above screenshot, do I just minimse both programs to my taskbar and leave it be?

- I do a lot of swapping parts out, am I under the impression as long as I dont format my windows I could carry on where I left off with just a faster cpu etc?

- If I do format, do I obviously lose my current WU? But when i re-format I could theoretically just reinstall F@H, enter my username, get a brand spanking new WU, and carry on from where I left off?

Answers to the above would be great, even better in bullet form, makes it easier for me to get my head round lol.

Finally...

Everybody list what theyre crunching! Only got it on an XP1800 atm but going to see how I go and get a little farm going by xmas :)

One more thing I done my sig thing aswell, am I assuming its not displaying any stats as ive only just signed up and havent completed a WU yet etc?

I'm sure most of your questions will be answered in a moment but I just thought I'd point out that special characters sometimes mess up the URL for your stats
You can use the underscore and brackets seem to work fine, however the dashes and square brackets might not

As you've not submitted any work yet you can change it now and all points should be credited against your new name

maybe -[OcUK]-Xplo could be done as _(OcUK)_Xplo
the name only has to be unique within the team anyway as users with the same name but in different teams have their stats kept seperately

Yep that looks fine - as default you will only see a message written to the window everytime it completes 1% (known as frames) of the total unit, the time between frames depends on the size of the unit and the power of your computer.
Though you can't see the messages it is also saving the progress every 15 minutes by default too even if it doesn't reach the next frame before you close it for whatever reason.

If you've installed it as a service as advised in the guide then use CTRL+C to safely close the client and either reboot your machine to start the service or run services.msc and select the Folding@Home service from the list and start it (there's a few other ways too - I think them may be covered in the guide)
The other program is FahMon which monitors your WU, you can minimize it down to the taskbar and even to the systray if you've selected that option. It doesn't need to be open all the time but it won't do any harm either

All you'd need to do is backup the whole Folding@Home directory (or the "fold" directory or whatever you've named it) and copy it onto your new fresh install, then just re-run the config to set up the service and you're away - it should also start from where you left off as long as it saved properly :p

My main rig is an X2 3800@2400 though all my other machines are SocketA so you can't be doing too wrong :)
Oh and if you want to run extra machines just use the same name and team number and the stats will add together

Yup it'll be a while as you need to submit a WU first and then it only updates daily - if you give me a shout I'll try the update link for you once your first WU has registered

Oops - the don's have been doing a spot for spring cleaning and it's gone..
the farm contains 20 Intel pc from a 500 celeron :o to P4 [email protected] :) these are doted around the busisness park I work in. :D

And rich answered all the questions, so all that's needed to be said is welcome to the best folding team in the world - Team 10!
 
I've just been looking through the stats and it seems some people have got [ ] and even - without a problem so maybe your name would be fine as it was :confused:

it may mean you can't search for your stats by name but you'll be able to find them in the team easily enough and the news post will include whatever you put anyway :)

nah I wasn't talking about the sig not working yet - I meant that special characters in names are meant to be a bad idea but from looking through other names in the team -[OcUK]-Xplo should work fine anyway (thus I was wrong when I first said it was a bad idea :p)

As soon as Xplo appears on the team page I can click Garp's magical update thingymajig and the siggy should work :)
 
Ive established that my sig does not currently work due to not completing a WU.

Installed on the 19th, checked this morning and was 12% complete, and right now F@Hmon says 0% :D

Got my new chip today, only a Venice 3000+ from welshtom from MM. Meant to be a v. good stepping, its going under water anyway so should see 2.7/2.8/2.9ghz atleast. Nice speed boost from my XP1800.
