Unfortunately my ASus P5k motherboard is a little long in the tooth. Its still great however and with XP i was able to use 5.1 sound etc.

Unfortunately the drivers CD is not compatible with Windows 7 - i have tried running it in compatability mode for vista etc but its not working.

Does anyone happen to know how to set windows 7 up to run in 5.1 sound mode? I have no real way of checking to see if it is running in 5.1 without holding my head up to the speaker!

I'll be honest mate, I never look on Drivers CD's unless I'm desperate. In the time between the motherboard was made, packaged, shipped, stored, sold, posted and unwrapped there will always be an update to something, so I always go to the manufacturers website to obtain drivers.

Asus don't list Windows 7 downloads for the P5K, but I would try the Vista ones (either 32 or 64, whichever your flavour of 7 is) and you should be fine. Here's the support area:

you'll just have to select Motherboard > Socket 775 > P5K in the drop downs to be given the choice of OS.

If you can't find an appropriate driver for anything (audio, etc) look up the details of chipset and google for it - Realtek drivers are much newer on their site than the ones Asus recommend for my motherboard. Good luck.

Sorry - forgot to actually answer your question!

In Windows 7, click Start > Control Panel > Double click Sound. Select the audio output (Realtek HD Audio usually) and click Configure. In here you should have the option to set 5.1 audio, or select 7.1 and disable the side speakers if you don't have the 5.1 option.
