¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is my first time I've used it, I'm used to the 32bit version.

Now, everything appears to be ok, so far, but I haven't installed drivers or anything like that (yet).

Are there any issues or things that don't work on x64 compared to x32? Does steam and thing like CS:S run ok under x64?

I'll wish you luck now with the fantastic game that is finding XP x64 drivers (compared to Vista 64 at least).

So wait, I'm better off going for x64 Vista? I've only just installed this so I guess now is the best time to jump to Vista x64 (if I have to).

I'm not using any funky hardware tho, onboard sound, wifi card, 8800gt, that's pretty much it!

You'd need to have an amazing reason to use XP x64 instead of Vista x64, like a particular piece of software / hardware requiring it.

Everything is largely the same. Most of the differences are under the hood, so to speak.

Firstly, it's built off Windows Server 2003 codebase. So it takes a different set of drivers, service packs, and updates to 32-bit XP. :)

XP x64 is on SP2, which you should get as soon as possible.

As for drivers, well I didn't find it hard to get hold of them at all really. All the main companies - Intel, ATi, nVidia, AMD - all have an abundance of x64 drivers.

Now your turn. What happened to your sig? With the facts? You know I may have to strip you of your title if it stays missing for too long. :(

Ok, I'll see how I get on with XP x64, I'm downloading drivers right now. I may give Vista a go at some point tho, when I get the time (and install disk)...

As for my sig, my hosting ran out, but I'll be getting some more soon, so it will make a return. ;)

after trying Vista business 64 on my gaming machine for around 3 months, and going back to xp64 (just formatted today), i'll be sticking with xp64, the fps difference between them in Crysis and Company of Heroes is astounding

i like vista 64, for it's layout & application speed

but hindered fps and pain in the butt sound (in games) with vista means for now at least i'm reverting to xp64

will be keeping vista 64 on my work pc :)

never had a problem finding drivers for x64 tbh, i'll sure miss superfetch, but all the programs i use on my home pc are either tiny (firefox / winamp) or a game anyway

The main reason for an FPS drop is DX10 being enabled. :)

I certainly don't notice a difference unless I have it enabled, and in most cases it's simple to disable.

Been using XP64 since its launch which is over 3 years ago.

I had issues at *** very beginning with drivers, but since then I have used what normal people call "Common sense" and these days if people have driver issues with XP64 then thats probably because they were in "that special class" in school.

I hate the way people **** off XP64 when they are clearly so wrong.

XP64 is faster than the other 3 too in most cases.

I have been running Vista64 for the last few weeks, and just a couple of days ago went back to XP64, this is now the 7th time I have done that and quite simply, while I want so much to go to Vista64 ( After all I bought it and am not using it ), it does not work for me anywhere near as well as XP64 does.

I cannot hack the slow copying/Moving, the unresponsiveness when running half a dozen apps, the overall performance of XP64 vs Vista64 just cannot be compared and XP64 is simply leagues ahead... Sure, the ga pis closing and every time I try Vista64 out, its getting better and better, but its still way off me wanting to leave XP64.

Trust me on this MH79 but XP64 is vastly superior to XP32 and you are going to soon start to see that... A lot of games also have 64Bit updates to them, one such game being FarCry, looks much better in XP64Bit, also Source Games too like HL2 etc also have optimized 64Bit code.

Ok, programs that I have had issues with when moving from 32 to 64

O&ODeFrag
Even though I have bought v10, I use v8.6 and I need a 64Bit version of this.
Vista64 FWIW takes longer to analyse its C: than XP64 takes to fully defrag it!!!

PAGEDEFRAG
I loved this under 2K and XP32 but can no longer use it...

Partition Magic
Not for 64Bit bu tthen its not for Vista either and so I went with acronis and to be honest, its much better than PM anyway, so no problems there.

Modem Drivers
I now use a router

Scanner
I used Common sense and my next scanner I bought I didnt get a cheap and nasty one and XP has drivers built in for it

Same with my WebCam - although I have never used it as a webcam, but I have drivers for that too.

Printers... When I moved to XP64 I had an Epson C42... Drivers were unavailable for that ( I think they are now though, but who cares? ) and all printers in the last 2 or 3 years have 64Bit drivers, and if the printer does not, then its obviously not a good printer.

Similarly for pretty much anything really.

End of the day, XP64 has been out over 3 years now and all the good stuff is fully supported by all the good companies and so if you actually have anything that does not have XP64 Drivers available then... Wow, you really should update your kit.

As for Vista64 v XP64 when it coems to drivers, this I have found is total B/S because XP64 has more drivers than Vista64, but of course the vista users dont like that so they try putting XP64 down.

XP64 is the best, fastest, most compatible and most reliable O/S of all the windows versions so far, not worth argueing that one, so just use it and enjoy.

totally agree

i really like a lot about vista, but for a performance machine, xp64 is the one to pick

XP 64 is just great:D and what a load of rubbish about drivers companies like Logitech (webcam, bluetooth keyboard and mouse) Epson (all in one printer) Creative X-FI, Nvidia gfx drivers + mobo drivers, All ma games + 4gb of ram work great on it.

i've used vista32 & 64 extensively and can't tell the difference between them. how come the difference between xp32/64 is so "amazing"? (i've never tried xp64 before :p)

If we have to explain, you would never understand.

ADDITION : Sorry, I missed a LOL at the end of this.

i've got the same pc as you :p, gaming is better in xp64
That's completely dependant on drivers and software. I've 1 game which runs around 80% quicker in Vista x64 than in XP x86!

I'll ignore the fact that's it's an old DirectX7 game which doesn't trigger the drivers into 3D mode in XP, which is always enabled if you've got Aero running. :D

By seriously, in most situations, there's very little difference between even XP 32-bit than the other OSs, usually to the tune of a couple of percent or so.

Well, I've got all the drivers running and some software installed and running fine also... Seems very fast, plus it makes use of all 8gb of ram.

I guess I was a little paranoid as I've seen many people have had issues going 64bit. It seems I'm not one of them tho (touch wood)!

I messed up on the last post.

The differences cant really be put into words, you will really have to try it yourself, and not just try it for 10 minutes and then judge it, but try it over time, get to use it fully and get used to it.

It does work in exactly the same way as XP32, it looks identical and feels identical except that its much more responsive especially under extreme loads or when its crunching massive numbers, and lets be honest, but these days with everythign being kept artificially large and high, this makes a difference.

Not only that but why bother making 64Bit CPUs ( As the yhave all been for the past few years might I add and still use an old O/S? )

XP64 is smoother than XP32 in everyday use, the little things like the mouse occasionally glitching will be all gone, 3D stuff runs silky smooth I cannot comment on how fast or slow it starts up compared to XP32 or even Vista32 or 64 because I never turn my PC off except for upgrades or whatever and I usually walk out the room to make a brew or have a slash when its starting up or shutting down anyway.

As bledd says... Just give it a whirl

My own XP64 CD I have added SP2, NVidia GFX, and a few other sillyness for the Mobo etc, and its spanking now...

Dont get me wrong, there is nothing actually wrong with Vista as such, its a new O/S and has teething troubles, many users have no issues at all and many do, many also fail to install it at all, and this is not the users fault, and lets be fair, but Vista is massive compared to any other O/S so there is a lot of code and a lot of chances for bugs so, its a great O/S considering its size, but XP64 is just better, thats all.

Many people who had issues going 64Bit will in most cases fall into 2 categories

1 - Vista64 Users

2 - XP64 Users before 2 years ago.

Ever since, XP64 has had all drivers just the same as XP32 in most cases ( Unless as I said, the hardware was low end anyway )

It seems you are not one of them because, as we have already seen, you are trying XP64 so no... You wont have any issues... as long as you use some common sense of course!

It seems very fast because its a fresh install... Any O/S will feel fast. XP32 slows down over time, but XP64 does not... To be fair, neither does Vista apparently. Only time can give us a true answer on that.

Oh, and.... Welcome to the real mens club.:D
