Just killed my first chicken

20 something weeks ago we decided to rear our own bird for the table. From a tiny 3 week old chick he grew with our egg layers. Tonight he went to bed as planned and me and the misses took him out and quickly dispatched him.

Some people have said they think it is cruel but the way I see it is I gave him 20 weeks of chicken bliss before I took it upon myself to do the nasty bit most families will be paying someone else to do so they can pretend its not real.

Christmas dinner will have an extra guest this year and we will be proud for him to join us.

Well done, I don't think I'd be able to do that easily, I'd be too worried about doing it wrong and causing too much pain.

Broom stick followed by sharp leg pull. He flapped like a true trooper despite his head being less than connected

i've 'dispatched' of 2 chickens in my life. Family are from portugal and my uncle has a farm, everytime i visit I kill a chicken for dinner.

Usually a sharp blade across the neck.... then it craps on me.

They do...I've seen them run off down the garden without a head...that was mildly traumatic as a child.

it tastes great, problem is I find the meat a bit 'tough'

I guess cause they built like the hulk cause they roam freely.

Ill be plucking and drawing on Tuesday. It was quite humbling holding onto his headless body as it flapped, no different to any other time. I held onto him and waited for him to pass. It was quite a moment to experience.
