I've always lapped my northbridge and cpu heatsinks but I was cleaning out my watercooling system today and thought what the hell, lets get the sandpaper onto the cpu.

CPU temps has dropped by 4 degrees!!!

The heatspreader was definately concave before as when i was sanding it the copper only showed on the outside of the chip until I got to the 800 grit paper.

Very pleased with the initial temp drop but I'll wait and see how things are after a week or so as the temps always drop a bit just after I clean out the system.

It's probably flat now, and even if it's slightly not flat it's not worth repeating.

However, stick with the roughest paper until you've got it flat, and then move papers.

I only had half a sheet of 400 and 600 grit and they didn't last that long (especially as i scratched it with the 600 and had to sand it out). :)

Yeah. That's why I'll use "fine" paper from Halfords or the like before I go to the "proper" lapping papers. The vast majority of metal removed is when you get it flat, and it's best off done as quicker and without using up the "proper" papers.

Then again, I've just relapped every waterblock in the PC today, just to be sure, and I don't see myself lapping anything for a while, not as if there's really any need to conserve sandpaper.
