We had a user the other day who did not shutdown at the end of the day, so some updates were not applied. They thought that just turning off the monitor turned the PC off.
The difference between a good and a great helpdesk technician is being able to think outside your own IT-box and be one or two steps ahead.
A few years ago in one of my non-IT jobs I was asked to do a favour for a colleague and "uplug the hard drive and leave it on the desk for the technician to pick up tomorrow". Not a problem - at the end of the day when she'd gone home I whipped off the case, popped out the hard drive and left it on the desk.
Next day I walk in and she's killing herself laughing. It turns out they only wanted me to uplug the tower. Luckily it was only a 2 minute job to bang it back in but it underlined the importance of not taking things for granted. Suffice to say one of my little mantras is never assume!

Ive had some remote users complain their new pcs kept switching themselves off at the end of each day. Finally found out via event viewer in fact the users had been switching them off but as they werent using the power button on the front of the case apparently this didnt count
