My dad's BMW today just lost power suddenly, it would rev (although not making a very healthy noise) but it wont pull away in any gears?

Cant really describe the noise, it sounds like it usually does but with a background noise, which is not the part that sounds good. Sounds a bit like small 'pops' when revved?

So any ideas anybody?

Its an 525i 1999 T reg Manual Petrol :)

If the clutch went how comes it jsut lost all power when it was in the 5th gear? Isnt the clutch idle when the engines in gear?

Yeah but you said it won't pull away in any gears, so how the hell am i supposed to know that it happened in 5th gear if you don't say?

Yeah sorry when I said 'it just lost power' I ment it lost power as we were driving along. Am I right about the clutch tho?

It could any of a large number of problems from trival (e.g. faully spark plug) to very serious (e.g. dropped valve). Very hard to diagnose things like this from behind a keyboard with limited information.

Is the check engine light on?

Well now you mention it, the cars fell to peices last few weeks, since 2 weeks ago this has happened, the door handle has come off (did you know there plastic made to look metal), and the speedo and all other dash stuff has broke, most dash lights are on, like the abs light etc even tho abs is turned off, its saying all lights are broke even though there working and laods of toher stuff. But i will look to see if the check engine light is on now ;)

I guess he means 523i...

Could well be the headgasket, same thing happened to a friend of mine.

One things for sure, you should stop driving it and get it to a garage.

Its booked it for tuesday, has been for a while now as all the other things going wrong with it, its indeed a 523i.

Yes your correct, it wont move, more so stutter slightly. If left to idle it will stall, and likewise if put into gear it will stutter before stalling.

its defo not a clutc/ rive train problem then. that all my input lol.
i doupt its just one plug or even a couple as its stioll got another 4/5 cylinders and so shoudl be fine with that. unless its a coil conection (or do they have multiple coils?) then it will be something much more sereous as said timing belt moved a tooth etc.

If the car won't move but stutters, surely that sounds like a stuck calliper piston?

Or perhaps a master brake cylinder failure locking up all wheels?

Sounds like the CAM, and a consequent valve issue. My mate has had the exact same thing. they changed the CAM and the chain.

My friend had a similar problem on his compact.
Turns out his driveshaft went, it cost a grand to fix but he blagged it on warrenty.
