Hey, just moved into the new flat on Monday, and discovered yesterday the washing machine doesn't work. The water doesn't enter the drum, it spins fine though. Would this be done through the flat management company or do we have to pay for it ourselves? When we bought we were under the impression it worked!

You have checked the isolator tap for the washing machine water supply? Sometimes its easily missed.

Yeh sounds like this might have been turned off by the previous owners.

you could always turn it off (if its on) and then take the hose out of the washer and stick it in a bucket and slowly turn it back on to see if the water is actually getting to the machine?

If you rent I would contact the flat management company. If you bought you'll have to check whether the contract lists a working washing machine otherwise you'll have to pay up

If the isolator is on but still not working, check the spigot the drain hose attaches to as sometimes these are blanked off (either removable disc or need to be opened up)

So I think I found the correct location! However, I have turned the attached images, both ways and still no water enters the washing machine. Water works find everywhere else! I've just turned them that way to test, I understand that shouldn't work? They were in the other position before taking this photo. That other tap is in our airing cupboard. The little blue tap is what I presume the one to the washing machine, as the washing machine is located on the left outside of the picture.

You need to disconnect the water inlet hose at the back of the washing machine and put it into a bowl to check you have water flow..

PLUS:Many washing machines have a small filter where the water inlet hose screws on at the back of the washing machine..

does it make the same noise if you put it on a wash as if you just put it on drain/spin (excluding motor and drum turning) or do you get a faint hum when on wash program.

If former will be capped, blocked or crushed oullet hose as all dishwashers and washing machines drain before starting a wash, you may not see the water but pressure switch will.
If just a hum it would be kinked or restricted inlet hose.

If it's a managed property and the white good are managed by them or the landlord, then just tell them it isn't working. They will either take you through what to check, come and get it going themselves or they will send a repair man / replace it. That's the joy of a managed property! :D

So far I've had a free repaired shower, new washing machine, repaired fridge, replaced cooker extractor, repaired hobs all for 'free' as part of the agreement. Some aspects of renting are awesome.

The washing machine at my work place had a neck lace jamming the water pump impeller last week which stopped the machine from doing just about anything..

Yup that'll do it :D I found a blokes necklace in one once, house full of women all denied any knowledge of it :D

@Belloni just to clarify this is a new machine in new flat?

Both new, the dishwasher hadn't been used not 100% sure on the washing machine though. When I spoke to the flat management company the woman said I need to speak to the development about white goods?! She wasn't the friendliest.

Goods supplied with a rented property are the responsibility of the landlord.

But as said previously it does sound like waste or inlet issue. Your photo shows the isolator currently stopping water flow (it should run with the pipe) have you checked waste?

It's not rented we've bought it :)

Also, I had another look last night under the boiler this time, and I noticed a isolator tap thing stopping water, changed that and still nothing.

The washing machine makes a humming noise.
