Please can someone tell me if i need to update my sons pc as its getting groggy and slow and sometimes crashes as i doesn't like the 6600 i put in and apart from the gpu which is fine and i was wondering what mb and cpu would be a good upgrade for this and psu if needed budget is under £500 and low as possible to be fair as money isnt great atm but i want to try my best to keep my son happy and carrying on having fun playing games etc :)

AMD RX 6600XT
corsair tx 550m
amd ryzen 3 3100 4 core am4
msi b450m mortar max (ms-7b89)
ddr4 3200
win10 64

Ryzen 3100 is weak compared to a 5600 which is 37% in single core in comparison and 2 more cores. You could get the 5700x3d which is one of the fastest gaming CPUs on that platform.

Crashing can be many things do the mentioned above windows reinstall first.

An upgrade to Windows 11 will also help performance if you upgrade the CPU. Microsoft reworked the scheduler to work better with AMD CPUs.

Which CPU cooler do you have? If it's the stock cooler then you will benefit from a decent one if you upgrade the CPU.

To summarise:

Update BIOS
Fit Ryzen 5700X3D
Fit cooler
Clean install of Windows 11.

Job done!

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £228.97 (includes delivery: £3.99)

You might want to add some thermal paste.

Peerless Assassin comes with a wee tube so no need to add any.

The Ryzen 3100 is the weak point, but I'd honestly start with troubleshooting why you're crashing rather than throwing money at it.
yeah i totally understand and ive tried so much inc updating the bios and the pc is still the same and when i take out the 6600 and put the 580 back in all is fine. so all i can think of is that the mb or cpu dont work well with the card or i need to reinstall win10.

thanks very much for the recommendations, and i will have a look. also i heard that win11 wasnt great for gaming but that was a while ago and when i tried it then i saw so many issues and the layout was awful as im stuck in the old ways of win7 and 10 is ok lol but 11 was like a mac unless that was changeable !

Have you tried forcing the primary PCIE slot to gen 3 or 2?

If you did want to replace everything, maybe something like this for the £500 you said:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £475.91 (includes delivery: £0.00)

or a cheaper alternative:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £364.96 (includes delivery: £0.00)

The CPU cooler is optional in both builds (there's one in the CPU box).

I don't recommend buying another AM4 PC or the Intel build above, since at least AM5 is a new platform. They would both be decent upgrades on the Ryzen 3100.

sorry i didnt get back sooner. thanks very much for this as i will get them all in my basket ready but was going to put windows 11 on first just to see if any different but is there anyway to get rid of the copilot in win11 as ive seen that and i hate it and thats why im on win10 atm.

I dont think you can?

also not sure how to force the primary PCIE slot to gen 3 or 2? never had to do that when times were more simple well in 2016 lol
Why do you need to force the pcie lanes to gen 2/3 just leave it on auto and let it do it's thing?

Can you quote/list the parts you want to buy please? Is easier than trying to read/comprehend an old thread.
