just had a few questions:

1. I have read about sandybridge not liking lots of volts on the ram cos of the integrated memory controller, what would this RAM run at at default? or should i set everything manually? (timings frequencies voltage etc)

2. What would be a decent overclock to expect from this cpu, mobo and cooler? Sandybridge overclocking is just using the multiplier isn't it?

3. Will I be able to overclock the GFX card? Will I need to push more volts through it to overclock? And what would the best tool be? (MSI afterburner, EVGA precision etc)

EDIT: 4. With regards to the SSD what do I need to do about TRIM etc?

sorry for the nooby questions, am upgrading from a Q6600 and a bit out of touch with modern stuff

Nice Kit!!
I would have gone with a different case, but its all personal preference

1. RAM will run absolutely fine - SB doesn't like 1.65V upwards (in some situations)
2. At least 4.5GHz - the auto feature can do this but tends to up the voltage more than needed.
3. Yup - MSI afterburner should do the trick nicely.

• It's best practice to set the memory frquency, timings and voltage manually - the XMS3 'should' run at 1.5V.
• ~4.5GHz is usually a given - but you could push for higher with that cooler
• Not familiar with your card but i'm sure you'll be able to get a decent overclock - either with standard voltages or pushing extra juice into it (someone will come along and give you a definitive answer).

If you have reinstalled Windows 7 then TRIM will be automatically enabled so there's nothing to do but you can check afterwards to make sure..

From a Command prompt type in : fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify


DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

As for the memory, you'll need to set the memory in the BIOS to use the XMP, as by default this will normally be set to the highest JDEC setting, normally 1333MHz.

To be honest you could save yourself a bit on leccy and heat by leaving the GFX card at stock settings. With that CPU, there isn't any game that your new rig wouldn't be able to handle at high settings on a 570 anyway

apparently you can get a quad rad in the front, a triple in the top and dual in the bottom!

In my opinion, unlike Crossfire/SLI setup...a SandyBridge i5 2500K max overclock on stock voltage (around 4.0-4.2GHz if I'm not mistaken) would be more than fast enough for a single GPU card (unless we are taking about older CPU demanding games that using only 1~2 cores like Crysis and WOW).

The GTX570 on the other hand is definitely worth getting a bit of voltage bump and to try to overclock to as high as possible.

cheers, well i will be trying to overclock it as high as possible that will be safe for 24/7 use

just dismantling my old rig to give it a bit of dust... god the cables are horrible
