just ordered dell xps m1330

Not to scare you or anything but i've had a lot of problems with 3 m1330's i've had- mainly cpu whine, build quality issues. In Dell's defence they have been good at dealing with them however.

Also, there are rumours of new xps notebooks being announced shortly- no doubt at a higher price but still something that might interest you.

Is a very nice notebook for the price - obviously not to the same standards as a Sony or Apple but is a fair bit cheaper and very well specced.

Enjoy!

No, to be fair it's not- but it's something that can be quite noticeable with the xps notebooks.

There's a whole list of things to watch out for:

Wonky keyboard due to misplaced wires underneath (Can be easily corrected if you don't mind taking it apart- but it is only very slight anyway)

Large gaps at hinges of screen (Only had this on 1 of them)

Static noise through headphone sockets (This is one thing all of mine have suffered from- quite bad static, apparently because the wires are not shielded sufficiently- I have seen some fixes floating about but never tried them)

Gaps around LCD bezel

Uneven base causing it to wobble on a flat surface (You can fix this yourself though with a bit of a twist)

Keyboard can occasionally miss strokes (very strange as never sure whether it's a placebo effect or not)

Wireless dropping out (Believe this is more to do with compatibility with various routers rather than an actual fault as such)

Top of bezel rubs against touchpad when closed (I did experience this and have had to use a crumpler slip to prevent it happening anymore)

I wouldn't worry too much- Dell's build quality has seemed to improve as the m1330 design has been around for a while now. Besides if you do see any of these issues (and they do bother you), Dell will happily send you a new one!

Think you mean the LED backlit screen- they're both LCD. But yeah the same problems can occur with both.

A crumpler slip is just a cloth that goes in between the screen and keyboard when it's closed- stops it rubbing and u can use it to clean the screen!

On my 1330, there are marks on the screen from the keyboard (and I'm generally very careful) - you definitely need to put something between the screen and keys when the lid is closed! Also, it looks like Dell are going to look after owners of this laptop experiencing GPU failure due to heat problems. Having said that I love the laptop and would definitely buy another.

I got one (Windows XP) and I love it. I have no problems with it at all (touch wood)... e.g. no cpu whine. I have updated the gpu bios, which in theory should keep the graphics card alive.

I've got one,

I hope you went for the LED backlighting as the normal one is very poor indeed

Just recently we've bought a lot of XPS M1330 units in for work.
I'd say we've had no less than around 15 - 4GB, Bright-LED models and generally speaking they have been good.
We had a trackpad fail on one and a screen fail on another.
However we pay for good service and in both cases they were here next day and repaired them onsite.

Most of my M1330 users have been very happy with them.
Until we moved to Dell about 6 months ago we were a Sony Vaio company.
However for a little loss of design/looks you get a lot more specification for your money on the Dell's.

Just use RMClock to stop the whine when you undervolt your CPU (should be done on all laptops) and get a shaggymac for the screen.

I managed to pick one up for £249 from the bay. Just needed to change the mainboard which took me 30minutes and £60. The build quality is not that good, but I like the aluminium palm rest area.
