I've been considering getting a new system for a while now and this is what I ordered (from OCUK of course):

- Intel Core i5 750
- Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 Intel P55 Micro ATX
- Lian Li V351b
- Asus ATi 5850
- OCZ DDR3 Obsidian Memory PC3-12800
- OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w PSU Modular
- Segate 7200.12 500GB Sata
- LiteOn DVD-RW drive
- Scythe Mini Ninja RevB.

About £760 in total. Can't wait for it all to arrive!

Haha yeah. Micro ATX case mate. It's going to be used primarily for media and will be connected to my telly via HDMI constantly. Will be used for the occasional game.

I have prepared myself for the wait, my mate is lending me a 6800 PCI-e =P

I'm a little worried about the standoff's, after reading that other guys thread.

I thought you only had to use 4? =S

Oh well, I guess I'll just use all the available ones that are in the case, as the might not all be there.

Just make sure you don't put extra standoffs in the case where there isn't a hole for it on the motherboard, else you could end up shorting things and making an expensive mess.

Sorry to double post but I have an important question.

When building my machine I am going to be using an anti static wrist band. To use this properly, do I need to have my PSU inside the case plugged in to the wall? Obviously I will have the power switch on the PSU switched off, and the the crocodile clip attached to the case?

Need to make sure I get this right, as some people just connect the crocodile clip to the case without having it plugged in... but then surely it's not grounded?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

Yup thats about right mate.
Although just touching the case itself is probbly enougth to discharge you of any static.
Depends how paranoid you are :D

Yes, you do need to have the PSU connected to the wall (NOT switched on!), otherwise nothing is grounded at all.

And you don't really need an anti-static wristband if your whole case is grounded, do you?

yes you do need a wrist band, if you don't then the static WILL damage the components. That's not to say you will ever notice any issues but something somewhere will have some damage due to static.

How much is a wrist band compared to the rest of the system?

It takes 10 seconds to put one on, there is no argument for not wearing one.

Can you provide evidence for this? I'm not saying don't wear one - if you feel more comfortable with it, then do - but I've never used one and I've never damaged a PC part *ever* via a static charge. (Unless that damage was unnoticeable, of course... in which case what exactly was damaged?)

I've bent a processor pin but I don't think a wristband would have prevented that! :o

Wristbands... or condoms? (Sorry, don't mean to take the mickey, just sounded funny to me!)

I found a video online years ago that explained it all. Just don't understand people who spent thousands on PC components but are too tight to buy a £2 wrist strap

There is evidence to support it, somewhere but even if there wasn't why take the risk?

Last week we purchased 10 cisco routers with adsl cards. Each one came with a wrist strap in the box
