Just ordered my first Mac!

Greetings fellow Mac users. :D

After 15 years of Windows based computing I finally took the plunge and placed an order for a Mac, I couldnt afford a top of the range Macbook Pro so I opted for 13 inch Macbook with a 2.4GHz Intel C2D, 2GB memory, 160GB HD and OS X v10.5 Leopard and it will replace my ageing old 2800+ Athlon PC.

I used to own a Dell laptop which came preinstalled with all sorts of rubbish, isp trials / trial software etc and the first thing I did was format and reinstall Windows. I understand that my Macbook will come preloaded with its software, will there be a lot of rubbish on there again and how easy is it to format and reinstall OSX if I needed to? I think I have OCD in the sense that I must have a nice clean install. :p

I have an ipod and a strong breeze would leave a scratch on it, does the same apply for macbooks?

Last question, I notice Apple dont sell an official desktop dock, what are the 3rd party ones like. I see the Bookendz dock seems to be a popular choice, are they any good?

I normally reinstall all my macs to take off the printer drivers, languages etc. You can use utilities to remove them without reinstalling, but it only takes a few minutes and you can pick exactly what you want.

I'd argue that demos of things like office are hardly useful.. you even have to uninstall the stupid thing to install the proper version :)
 
Well done matey, yea I'd do a fresh install right away. There are in Options to deselect various things like Printer Drivers, Extra Fonts & Languages. Really gets rid of wasted GB space.

After thats done and finished, install all the updates.

Your ready to go then! Enjoy.

Never heard or seen docks before, but if you fancy it go for it.

^^^^ by removing 'unwanted drivers' etc, your hardly gonna free up much space,leave well alone mate and enjoy your mac
 
Going to order the following this week :

3.06Ghz
4Gb Ram
500Gb HDD
8800GS

Really really cannot wait, I got rid of my PC today but it is going to take weeks before I get it :(
I'll be using a Logitech G5 and the Apple wired keyboard, but does anyone know if I can get the buttons on my mouse working in OS X?
 
I think you can get the Logitech software for OSX and it works with the G5 (doesn't with the G9 :() but you can assign mouse buttons to things like spaces and exposé using System Preferences
 
This thread has just prompted me to remove the demo of Office 2004 from my iMac :p

Removing it is a doddle, there's an uninstaller for it which searches the HDD and removes it.

I honestly wouldn't bother starting from scratch, it's not as though my iMac has become sluggish by any means with the extra drivers, language installed. If anything, it's still as quick as the day I bought it! :)
 
I haven't used the Logitech software and I've managed to configure my G5.

2 side buttons are exposé and hide all, which is all you need really.

I always reinstall the OS.. don't know why, it always feels quicker than the out-of-the-box install.
 
The fresh install of Leopard will allow you to not to both with the MS trial run package etc which gets probably a minute return in speed and some HD space (more important for us lappy users). I would suggest that you do it.. if you like that fresh install feel! Don't forget to install iPhoto from your install disk set!
You could explore all the trial and packages such as garage band (get drunk and spend a night 'composing' whilst listening to inspirational music) then see if you want to keep it later when you listen to the results in the next morning!

Me too, but I actually think it is a hang over from my many, many years with Windows. Sure it feels faster but it is probably a placebo effect. Except for my first Leopard upgrade. That did not go well and it certainly was a lot faster when I did a fresh install! :)

I do a removal of the languages I don't need too, but that's just some kind of OCD I have...
 
Exactly the same spec I'll be looking to order very shortly! :) Hope you enjoy it, a fantastic operating to use with all the benefits of been able to run Windows (if required)

iirc, the printer drivers weigh on at about 800 MB ad the language packs add a couple of GB, so it could bed significant for some users, especially those with smaller laptop hard drives.

How did you manage this? presume its with some other software? as i've got a logitech mouse too and can't find any option in system preferences for the extra buttons.
