Hi all,

Just hit the submit button on my first ever Macbook order,

Went for the 2.4Ghz, 4Gb memory, 128Gb SSD hard drive MacBook along with the 24" Apple LED Cinema display and a separate keyboard.

Can't wait for it to get here!

Me and my bank balance would agree with the rather expensive comment... I couldn't help myself with the spec sheet.

Just out of curiosity, what made you go for the macbook over the pro?

Also, what was the reasoning behind the 128GB SSD upgrade? £411 seems a lot. For the price you paid i would have gone for a middle spec MacBook Pro personally with a 7200RPM drive.

What be interested to hear why you went for the upgrades/options you did!

Thanks.

There was a number of reasons - With computers, especially laptops, I know I never regret getting a higher spec - even if it does push my budget out. I've never had a SSD before and I wanted to try it to see the power usage/speed/noise improvements over standard mechanical drives. I also have a supersized server at home which I use for storage so I wasn't concerned about the reduce size of the drive.
I previously owned a 13" Sony Vaio for 2 years and I loved the size of it. Perfect for simple email/browser use, very portable and allows a fullsize keyboard.

I was tempted by the Macbook Pro but I think it's a bit out of proportion (keyboard is a similar size as the Macbook - just with a bigger surround). The cost would have been seriously prohibiting with the SSD option.

Also I got the 24" LED Cinema display which I use when I want a bigger work area and can be bothered to get out of bed ;) so I didn't need the extra screen space you get on the MBP.

Yeh I dont know what the other hard drives are like in MB/MPB (how noisy etc) but obviously these are silent (a bit offputting actually as I'm used to listening to hard drive accesses to see if the machine is working) and battery life seems amazing. I used it for a solid 2 hours on the train today and still had over 60% battery - even when my old Vaio was brand new it wouldn't do more than 2.5 hours.
Can't really comment on performance as I've got nothing to compare it against!

Ill time boot-up speed at some point...

As for the SSD choice, I've explained my reasons for going for the Macbook over the Macbook Pro. Even ignoring them, I doubt I'll keep it long enough to notice the lack of a good GPU and the better spec CPU is negligible imo (only a slight increase in clock speed and possible additional cache (?) but the same architecture etc, it's not like you're comparing a Core 2 Duo with an Core i7 chip).

I've put all my files onto my network drive and left them there - I will pick at them (probably for up to 6-12 months) and then delete the whole lot - If I didn't need it in the 6-12 months, I probably never will.

I don't know of any faster way.
