I currently use the Hyper X Cloud gaming headset and in truth they are quite decent to my untrained ears (certainly not amazing though), a massive setp up on most gaming heatsets at least.

My listening would be 70% Gaming, 30% Music.

The one issue i have is, and there is no way of getting around it, i just cant talk to people on the mic with closed headphones.... I am constantly having to speak above game audio so basically shouting. I have tried my best to get use to it but my brain just wont function when i cant hear my own words, its totally strange and an issue specific to me because most people can use closed cans no issues.

There is no sidetone feature in the Hyper X and the software solutions to being to be able to hear myself talk have a slight delay and make me speak like a total ****, my brain just doesnt work correctly in this regard haha.

I dont have a lot of cash to spend so found some DT990's on Amazon Warehouse for £84 plus i had £25 in vouchers so in total only £59 :D

I was also looking at the seinniser HD598 (£123) and the AKG K702 (£103 amazon warehouse) but i heard the DT990 were a little more open so i can hear myself talk.

Do you think this will help my issues with speaking on the mic?

What mic solution should i get? i have tried the Zalaman clip on and it was crap and the extra wires were annoying but its £9 so...

Are the Mod Mic's worth it?

I have an Asus DGX (built in amp) soundcard will this be ok with the 250 DT990's? I can also get an Asus STX fairly cheap off a friend who doesn't use his if that would be better?

Will i be in for a good upgrade with the DT990's? ive never used open headphones

Thanks

I can't answer about the mic as I don't use one but I have used my DT990 pros with my Xonar DX, which is unamped and they sounded fine even though it's got a ridiculously high output impedance of 100ohms, the DGX has a headphone amp so should be even better.

For 250ohm headphones they're surprisingly easy to drive, even my onboard sound sounded good. Sure they sound better through my Little Dot tube amp but it's not a night and day difference; the bass is better tho.

Definitely try a movie with 5.1 sound on them using Dolby Headphone, the subbass rumble is immense!

They're very good for the price, as long as you don't mind bright headphones, which I don't.

Comfy as heck too, like wearing ear muffs haha

Oh, and yes you can hear yourself talk as they're open, but obviously depends how loud the game/music is.

Did you get them?

I did, they sound great with the Asus Xonar STX,

LOVE dolby surround for games the soundstage is great with these.

Music sounds so crisp especially mids. The highs are very bright, i can see why some people think its a bit too harsh but i quite like it. And they are mega comfy.

I ended up getting a Samson Go mic as my mic so no annoying cables to deal with :p

What i will also say is that even though the DT990 are in a different league than my old Hyper X, It just shows how amazing the Hyper X is for a "gaming" headset. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend them its just a shame for me they are closed.

They stack up decently against audiophile grade stuff just a tad muddy in the mids and bass
