The missus has just ordered The Witcher for me for Christmas due to the excellent reviews I have read.

I am hoping it is going to provide real depth & open ended gameplay is this what I can expect?

It's a great game.

The Holy Grail of free game playing has yet to be achieved (IMO) but The Witcher does allow you to do, pretty much, what you feel like doing at the time. There are no "wrong" choices. Your actions will have consequences, often consequences you could not have foreseen. Ultimately though, as in life, you will have to pick a side.

Its linear in the sense that you are shepherded from one zone to another, but once you are there you can do pretty much what you want

its very good so far (im only in act 1) but the loading times are driving me nuts, seems to take ages to go into a house then back out into an open area :(

a patch is coming very soon which will help a lot apparently. also adding it to Alchemy if your in vista helps with the loading times for some reason.

Notorious. yep. its not graphically good in the sense of oblivion and shineyness, but it has that gritty feel to it with some really nice affects, choices really matter. i actually felt pretty sad after one of my decisions early on in the game  the first bit is easy and trains you up and then your set out along your journey. the combat may take some getting used to if your used to other RPG's i take it (i dont usually play them, this is a exception) but i found it well thought out and intuitive.

Thats what i like about RPG games, especially the witcher. The combat system is addictive and fun while remaining to RPG elements and is not entirely linear. The other great thing is if you dont rush this and do it on medium/hard mode it will last you a while :)

The loading times were fine for the prologue, then i got to the first big-ish town in chapter 1 (with the reverend) and they seem to have doubled :(

My Girlfriend has the special edition of this. it comes with a key ring, t-shirt, a movie and some books. I have to say the graphics look excellent.
