Just over clocked to 3.60 but crashed.. do I need to increase voltage?

I have the phonon x4 955 II currently at 3.20...

I need to hit 3.6ghz; I am using AMD overdrive. I didn't want to play about with voltages but It would seem I have to. My PSU is 750w OCZ so it can handle the OC.

I have the following available to increase...

CUP VID - currently 1.35.. Is this the one I need to up? Would 1.38 be sufficient or should I go to 1.4?

There is also NB VID, CPU Extra, VDD Extra, DDR, NB, HT and SB... I presume I don't need to alter any of these? It is just the CPU VID yeah?

thanks

As long as you don't go over 1.5v you'll be fine. Try 1.38 first, if that doesn't work then 1.4v. You might be able to reach 3.8ghz with 1.4v.

I managed to hit 3.5ghz at CPU VID - 1.8

On a stress test I hit around 57-58c after 10 mins so I guess I will stick with that.

I did try to get to 3.6ghz but even at 1.41 volts I was crashing when testing. I presume the temp will go over the 60 mark but I would like to try at least. Do I need to change any other settings i.e. NB?

Thanks

1.8v is too high, You're going to put your chip into an early grave.

Although now I've had my coffee. I seem to think that may be a typo :p

KEEP IT WELL BELOW 1.8.

There have been far too many horror stories of people on a 4+1 power phase frying their mosfets running VID at almost 1.5. Let alone 1.8.

FWIW, I'm running my unlocked phenom II x2 545 unlocked at 3.6, with a VID of 1.43. Your CPU might just not be able to cope with the O/C.

 that was meant to be 1.38 ;)

I have just hit a stable 3.6ghz @ 1.43 v temps are lower than yesterday (55c after 15 min stress) but the heating hasn't been on so room temps are low. I'd say on full load with higher room temps It would reach 60c at 100% load...

When playing games such as Skyrim what percentage load would you expect the CPU to be at? 60%? so when playing games the temps should not reach anywhere near 60c right?

Thanks

EDIT: just managed to hit a stable 3.6 @1.42 with temps at -55c

What CPU cooler are you using? And what program are you using to read temps as most of them are usually wrong due to AMD deciding temps to be measured from the socket...

at 3.6ghz stable with stock volts mine hits 50c under load and i've got an early c2 model. think upgraded HSF would be in order or make sure your current one is seated properly.

I've yet to find a game that heats up a CPU anything near as much as a prime run - except BF3 single player campaign! The AI in that seems to pull as much grunt on as many threads as it can. And of course the GPU is dumping heat too :S

If you're priming at 55, I doubt you'll go over 50 in games :)
