*thread :)

So I passed my test earlier today with 3 minors, now I need to start thinking what to buy.

I have just taken our an ER6 2009 model, it was nice but fairly buzzy through the handles. I would prefer a bike to be smooth as it will be used for commuting and a bit of weekend fun.

I was then thinking about the k750, apparently they are smoother - is that because of the engine type?

What other bikes could people suggest. I can spend up to 4k, but ideally would like to spend less if possible (who wouldn't?)

Also who do you use for insurance?

Cheers for any help.

What do you want, sports / tourer / faired / naked / enduro / adventure
I could suggest a bike for £1k which would keep you pleased, you need to fix your budget if you want to spend less then stick with it
What about insurance what's you area like, is insurance high?
If a smooth bike is what your after V twins are incredibly smooth, singles will shake you teeth out and inline 4cyls are revvy, a v twin is torquey without being revvy or lumpy

ok, so v twin sounds like my sort of cuppa.

I dont really mind the look, naked or faired. Don't want something too sporty because I will be using it for a short commute each day, 5 miles - sometimes 20 miles depending on where I am, but would also like a bit of fun at weeks should I desire.

in short: comfortable, smooth, not hugely fast to keep insurance down.

I live in an OK area, with a garage.

Have a look at SV650s :)

Supposed to be relatively good all rounder.

I would suggest however you test ride bikes before making your mind up, twins can feel like they vibrate a lot and give numb hands (though for most people that would be alleviated by gripping the tank with their knees and not putting so much weight on the wrists).

Another bike to try would be something like a CBR600F if you want a sports type, it is an In Line 4 (IL4) and relatively smooth and comfortable as well as having the capacity for fun at the weekends.

For your first bike though I would suggest something without a fairing, broken plastics can potentially write a bike off as they are expensive to replace.

In this case the ones to look at would be;

Triumph Street Triple (3 Cylinder)
Honda Hornet (IL4 de-tuned CBR 600RR Engine)
Yamaha FZ6 (IL4)
Suzuki Bandit (IL4)
Kawasaki ER6n (Parallel Twin)
(Ordered from top to bottom what I'd look at in order)

End of the day it's up to you, the nakeds can be a lot of fun without going silly speeds.
Also note with V-Twins you can be going rather deceptively fast, the same applies for bikes with fairings.

Honda Hornet (IL4 de-tuned CBR 600RR Engine) - Get this :)

i like the look of these

only prob is there are only 3 in 40 miles of me and 2 are £4500

Why limit yourself to a 40 mile radius? If your perfect bike is 100 mile away get it. The other week I made a 450 mile round trip to pick mine up. Did it in a day easy. Did I want to do it? No, but when I got her home I was glad I did.

fair enough, but no one i know is kind enough to shift me 450 miles to get a bike.

**** friends!

Well i test drove the ER6, Honda Hornet and the Z750, and I bought the Z750.

Completly different experience to the other too. Obviously it has more power, but that wasn't the selling point for me- it was the handling, ride comfort and smoothness of power delivery.

Extremely happy!

I test drove ER6F, SV650S and a 650 Bandit. I chose the GSX 650F (IL4) simply because its bigger, heavier and feels nice and solid. I really like the blue/silver and black :D
