Hi all,

I was just testing out a new X360 Arcade console - Which I believe have 'Lite-On' drives and it seems to be a lot louder than the old console I had?

is this normal?

Thanks

I thought the noise was mostly down to the delta fans? It's just pot luck really if you're going to get a quiet or a loud one.

The DVD is indeed the major cause of noise on 360's and always drowns out the fans (this is based on 3 consoles I've owned so far).

My latest one has the BenQ drive and it's definitely the quietest of the 3 I've had (previous ones have had the hitachi drive)

So...yes, it is normal for your DVD drive to be noisy. See this link, which will help determine which one you have...

360 DVD Drives

According to the above link i've got a new BenQ drive (bought 3 weeks ago) which is supposed to be the quietest of them all...

I feel sorry for anyone who's got the others if that's the case, it may be the delta fans but there's a high pitched whine from the second i turn the machine on, i was planning to use it as a primary dvd player but went out and bought a standalone player after it getting on my nerves during a quiet movie.

It's not baaaaad, just not great either.

360 DVD drives are all about as loud as each other, there are differences but they aren't that great. I've had extensive use of all the different types, and I would be hard pushed to say one is quieter than another.

Llammas site doesn't show the Liteon, which is essentially identical to the BenQ in appearance. Chances are you have a Liteon if it's a new console manufactured in the last quarter of '08, but if you use the wires colours as a guide on that site, and look at yours, if your wires have a yellow tint to them it's a Liteon.

The drive is pretty much silent when playing a DVD movie.

Easiest way to tell is just to turn the 360 on without any disc in it, if you hear the same noise it's the fans :p

The drive does spin up to near max briefly at start-up though with a disc in.

If the op had dug deeper in his pockets and bought a system with a hard drive he could have cut down on this problem. :)

Alternatively, If he'd spent £0, There'd be no noisey sound atall right?

The OP shouldnt have to spend more for the option of installing to the hard drive. The 360 is put together asthough blind crack addicts did it inorder to keep the job centre happy and get their next Giro.
