Just purchase Fallout 3... Won't even start

Hello,

This is pretty frustrating, just laid down 30 quid for Fallout 3 on Steam and the stupid ting won't even start.

I've tried uninstalled and re-installing the latest version of .NET and MSFT Games for Windows. I've also tried modifying the .ini file to stop it using 4 cores (my CPU is quad core). And just now I tried applying the latest 1.7 patch, to which the game crashed again.

I'm not even able to actually get into the game itself. As soon I hit start new whatever the loading screen comes up, the game crashes to desktop and there is this annoying sound that won't stop repeating, so I have to restart my system.

Few specs:

I've had absolutely no problems playing any other games on this machine, everything high quality and great frame rates.

Thanks!

Had a similar problem. F3 just would NOT work, crashed during character selection screen.

Still not managed to solve it.

Maybe it doesn't support the 400GTX series cards?

400GTX series are very new, I'd have said a system with a GPU like that, and 4GB of memory, he'd be better off plonking £80 down for a copy of windows 7 home 64Bit as the 400GTX is new tech with newer hardware features such as DX11, and he'll not be getting all the features, let alone all his 4GB of memory..

No DX10 or DX11 support for Windows XP 32Bit, time to bite the bullet and let Windows XP die, Windows 7 64Bit is where he needs to spend his next wod of cash IMO.

Stupid though it may sound, have you redefined any of the keyboard controls? If so, change the controls back to the defaults and then try starting a game.

Sounds daft, but it totally remedied my crashing issues on Fallout 3, havent crashed since.

You're insane, it's £12 off play.

Decent computer like that on 32-bit XP and an IDE drive? Makes no sense!

It's actually SATA2, not IDE. Speccy must be reading it wrong. Pretty sure there's very little difference in performance though.

And XP is awesome. Lightening fast and runs everything I need it to

I reckon this is the problem, the game doesn't support the 400 series of GF graphics. Kinda lame considering every other game I play (including World at War) runs perfectly. Ah well :(

I doubt there's much difference between 3GB and 4GB in terms of system performance. XP on 3GB is more than fast enough. I do take your point about DX10/11 tho. Would be nice to have support for that

No bud, not touched anything in settings

is there another SP for XP? also remember on 32 bit it will only show like 3GB with a 1Gb card

if I was you I ll go to 64bit

also to the point, does it do this with any other game?

if so it may be the PSU not feeding your little beast GPU :p

Nope SP3 is the latest.

Honestly I don't care about only having 3GB instead of 4. I've built enough machines to know that with this configuration it makes bugger all difference.

I might do a partition tonight and put Win 7 64bit on though... Just to see if Fallout runs on that

Every other game runs amazing. Even the old World at War. I play the Zombie mod on that at the highest setting and get a constant 90FPS.

MW2 and BC2 also run perfectly.

This is the only game I've had the slightest bit of trouble with

thats a relive to hear, I will admit I have a bit of trouble with fallout3

I m on vista 64bit, but I don't crash out I just go back to desktop. very annoying

Tried different versions of Nvidia's drivers? Read the release notes to see if there are known issues with 400 series with Fallout 3?

The crashing upon game engine start up sounds like a graphics issue to me.

Just checked the release notes and there's no mention of an issue with Fallout.

I guess my only option is to try it on Win 7. If the problem continues I can only put it down to the 470 and hope there's a patch or new set of drivers that come out to fix it.

The joys of PC gaming
