Just purchased a canon 550D.

As its my first DSLR of any kind I'm still very much learning about this side of things. I've purchased the obvious like a case to keep it safe and some screen protectors but is there anything else I should order?

I've heard some of you mention something about a grip before?

Go on, help a noob out. Pleease :D

The only extra I would even consider at this point would be a book.

Understanding Exposure - Bryan Peterson.

It costs peanuts and is worth every penny. You have a very capable body and I presume kit lens so I wouldn't go spending on anything until you hit the limitation of what you have already.

Just purchased this for £10 from the jungle store, hopefully it will help me with my new 600D kit. ;)

A grip is an attachment that connects to the bottom of the camera which makes it bigger. It has two main features in that it allows you to have two batteries in the camera at once or the option to power it using loads of AA batteries. It's other ability is that it allows you to shoot portrait orientation without having to twist your hands around because it has an extra set of portrait control buttons.

It obviously makes the camera bigger and a bit heavier. Some people especially like this on the smaller DSLR models.

Personally, as this is your first DSLR and you've just purchased it, I wouldn't bother with a grip right now. I'd get whatever accessories you need and put the rest towards lenses.

If you haven't already, get yourself a bag, a rocket blower and lens cleaning items.

Thank you :) Will order now.

Obviously forking out for my new camera I dont have a lot of money to throw at it just yet I just wanted to get any essentials. Hopefully I can find a local photography course to join up. But some reading like what you've mentioned sound perfect to me.
Surely that titles going to be next to 50 shades of grey? lmao :D sorry too much time in GD

ah i see, thanks for clearing up what the grip is. Sounds like a handy bit of kit, but not essential for now.

rocker blower? sorr, no idea what that is and on a popular auction site it showed me one listing looking like a remote from the 80's (have i spelt it right?)

lens cleaning kkit ordered - thank you:)

already bought a bag, just a cheapie but will do for now

A Rocket Blower should be quite obvious if you google it, as 99% of the hits are exactly for it. It's just a rocket ship shaped air blower that can be used to blow dust off your lenses, camera body and off the mirror.
