My Community First Response course!

Very happy chappy here! As some of you know I work for West Midlands Ambulance Service as a Call Taking Supervisor, well last year I made an application to become a Community First Responder (Meaning I respond on a Voluntary basis to 999 calls) they will train me to an intermediate level, so i'll be able to Defib properly, immobilise breaks etc.

Very excited as from where I am situated i'll be able to respond on 2 schemes for 2 parts of the service (One who will possibly train me to Blue Light status)

Anyone else done this or considered doing this?

I wouldn't be particularly happy if one of my loved ones was in dire straights/extreme pain and a spotty little oik (I don't know if this is you, but that's my experience of mini drivers in general ;)) turned up in an old mini.

Haha, well from where I am eventually I will be put on the Staffordshire CFR Scheme (They're putting me on the Black Country Scheme to begin with for other reasons) but eventually when I get to that point i'll be using a proper response car (Blue lights.. the lot!) so it won't be in my Mini forever!

Congrats...are you thinking of progressing into paramedic or anything?

Possibly.. a few things need to happen in my current job before I consider it but this is really the stage I wanted to get to, Management in the Control room and able to respond also :)

To be honest if I was in pain or having a heart attack I wouldn't care if he pulled up in an old Lada and was spottier than Mr Spotty of Super Ted.

Congrats mate though - a lot of people couldn't/wouldn't do that job. I have the utmost respect for the emergency services.

Well done mate - I too signed up for this, and have started training.

A bit different here though, as we have no paramedic support. If it's serious, we have to get the Air Ambulance to fly in.

Looking forward to having a second pager!

That's brilliant mate, especially where you live! the second scheme i'll go on later in the year uses the new Sepura Airwave Radios, should be fun!

any idea on the number of call outs you might expect to recieve, on average, in a typical summer week?

My dad has been a community first responder for a while now and loves it so much to the point that he is thinking about studying to become a paramedic.
He pretty much always puts himself on call which my mum isn't too impressed abotu when his phone goes off at 4am and he has to dash out :D

Very much looking forward to it, especially since i've wanted to get a proper taste of responding to incidents properly, i've been out on visits at work (We have a Responder Car based at our control room we can go out on) and it's always really good.
