HMRC letter just landed through my door and is demanding I pay nearly £500 of tax I am due them. I submitted my tax return on 25th January and stated on the form I wanted to pay via PAYE from my monthly salary. I called them up (waited over 20 mins) to be told that my tax return needs to be submitted before December to utilise this option.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case because I didn’t receive any letters stating this?

Afraid so. Pretty sure it used to be September for this option too, so they've obviously granted a few more months grace.

Damn I still think they should make it a bit clearer as its not the most obvious thing in the world. Ah well better go and cough up :(

I got hit by this too. Just phone up and say you want to pay back by dd at £100 a month (or whatever). Think they bill 3% interest if you choose to do that...

you should pay before the 28th Feb or you'll be getting a nice 5% surcharge on the balancing payment still outstanding, on top of the 3% interest they're currently charging you daily ;)

This is tax for the year ending April 2010, and the first payment for the april 2010- october 2010. It is stuff you owe them and are due to pay.

Collecting it from PAYE does slow down the revenues collection. Submitting to them 6 days before payment deadline and asking for payments to be deferred is chancing it at best.

I have completed a self assessment for the past two years, since last year I have gone back to PAYE with no other adjustments, does anyone know how long it will take them to revert me back to no self assessment?

It depends. You could be filling one out for life.

What was the reason for them asking you to fill in a tax return in the first place?

The first time you complete a tax return that doesn't qualify for self assessment it will put up a flag as to whether you need to complete one in future. Whether they have enough resources to work the worklist items is another story though (close off account, issue letter etc). Alternatively you can ring up and tell them you don't think you need to complete a tax return and they can probably close it over the phone.
