Just received the 165 opt!

haha :)
I found that too using google. Just wanted to hear it from my trusted friends at ocUK forums :D

Problem is, I didnt buy the DFI as intended. The Asus A8N-E looked promising and doesnt have all the extras which DFI has.
Will I be able to oc this baby properly with the ASUS?
I heard the MOSFETS get screaming hot when hitting high HTT, which is a must for this chip.

So the A8N-E should do the job then :)
How are the new A64/opteron stock coolers? noise/cooling ability?
Will I need a different cooler to make use of the potential in the 165?
If so, which cooler would you guys recommend?
Currently using the SP-97 with YS-tech 92mm fan on my XPM. the fan is 30db+ which is a little loud imo.

Excellent post aj :)

To this date my PSU has been limiting me when overclocking my XPM. The 12v rail has problems when running at 2.5ghz & 1.7v. Drops to 11.45!
As the opteron runs below 1.4v maybe the PSU will do fine for now?

You have the same Opty 165 as me.
Mine is good for 2.4Ghz @ 1.35v 267 HTT (1:1), 2.6Ghz @ 1.45v 289HTT (333 divider). It will boot and run ok at 1.35v 2.6Ghz but falls over in prime after an hour or so. Had to go up to 1.45v to stop it falling over at some point during prime but everything else ran fine at 1.35v, even FEAR, DOOM3, 3dmark05, PCmark04/05, Sandra burnin
Haven't pushed it futher as the stock heatsink gets to 53C under load (dual prime) despite my tornado of 80mm case fans. I have a new Antec P180 on the way and am currently choosing a better and hopefully quieter cooler.

You should buy a new PSU before you try overclocking. A standard XP 3200 consumes around 77W at 1.65 volts. The Opteron consumes around 110W at 1.35v. Increasing voltage and clock speed will increase power consumption significantly so your PSU will be under great stress. If it fails it could destroy your new system.

Mate great post. deffo getting another PSU then.
Aside from the Hiper TYPE-R what PSU's do you guys recommend? Not too pricy and quiet please :)

In terms of heat sinks I can't say that I am exactly dissapointed with my Zalman, but there are better coolers out there. The termalright XP/SL 90/120 range are all really good and if you put a Akasa fan them they are not much louder than my Zalman.

I am not so knowledgable about PSUs but I hear the OCZ ones are quality. Can I ask why you didn't want anyone to recommend the r-type hyper? So far mines been sound as a pound and was affordable besides.

I've been recommended the Type-R by several in here :)
Although I read in the MoBo forum a few had problems with them.
