Just reinstalled Windows - best codecs?

I'd like everything to work just in media player / media center..... I presume either Shark or K-Lite will allow for this without changing to classic etc?

Shark for me looked really amateurish with the settings application, etc and wasn't good when I used it some time back. K-Lite felt to me like many codecs were just thrown in.

One that works great and efficiently is CCCP, but it's not updated often.

I use FFDShow Tryouts with the Haali media splitter installed. WMP plays everything I throw at it :)

Close to me, I use FFDShow tryouts, but I also use Ac3filter, which is an amazing AC3 / Dolby decoder and CoreAVC (an awesome, incredibly fast but good quality H.264 decoder, but not free alas)

This plays everything I throw at it, including 45GB Blu-Ray films. with a minimum of CPU usage.

The thing with codecs and such is what do you actually need. Those packs try and cover everything, but you might actually need next to nothing.

Unless there is something particular file you're concerned about playing I'd just go with Media Player Classic and FFDshow to cover the basics.

Do you actually need anything for Windows 7? All I've installed is DivX Codec to stream MKV files to the 360s.

Everything else just plays perfect with VLC.

Simple answer is none, and you can get on fine with just some standalone players. However if you did need codecs because of performance or compatibility issues, then there's the suggestions above.

Same here, apart from the fact that I don't have an Xbox :D

VLC has been flawless for years, for me ^_^
