just reseated cpu and pc won't boot. please help

hi,

just reseated my cpu as it was running a bit too hot.

now i think i have a problem and i don't know why.

everytime i boot the machine i get "cmos checksum error - defaults loaded".

i've even reset the cmos with the jumper on the board b ut i still get this.

when i press f1 to continue after this windows refuses to boot. i get various messages (all of which i've seen loads of times before and i hate them) like ntldr is missing and hall32.dll is missing.

i've booted the machine with a boot cd and i can see that the partitions are still there with all the files on them that should be there.

when i reseated the cpu i didn't do anything violent and i was wearing an anti static wristband.

anybody got any ideas???? flapping a bit here.
 
this strikes me as a hardware problem. even though i've reset the cmos more than once (manually with the jumper), and in the bios choses load defaults, i still get the cmos checksum error
 
right. discovered something. has happened to me before.

somehow both my discs have ended up as "active" for boot.

if i disconnect the disc that i store all my data on and leave my xp disc connected, the system boots ok.

then i can reconnect my data disc once its booted and access my files. but if i leave it connected and restart i get ntldr is missing again.
 
have you looked for a hdd priority it should be in boot priority... its obviosly trying to boot from the non os hdd

yeah you're right. the reason being that both partitions are set as active. i've just spent a while learning how to use diskpart and i have now resolved this, but i still have a problem. i installed bootmagic cos i thought this would help me. then i realised i was barking up the wrong tree and tried to remove it. couldn't remove it successfully so i deleted the partition it was on and now at start up the system is looking for boot magic..................

so now trying to fix this
