Well never done any distributed computing stuff before but thought I would put my processing power to good use!

So I have downloaded the GUI client and joined the OCUK team.. question is how long should it be taking my rig to complete each frame? Running at around 4min 15seconds at the moment is that any good?

And also how do I know how many points I am going to get?

And Finally!?! can I put the client on more than 1 PC under the same user name?

Welcome :)

You can run as many clients as you want using the same username. But each client must be give a different Machine ID number.

Fahmon is great for monitoring the client and will tell you how much points the current unit is worth. It will also give you the points per day (PPD).

4mins 15secs sounds ok, but you'd be better using the non-GUI client. The GUI wastes valuable CPU cycles ;)

Also seriously look into using the WinSMP client instead for C2D and C2Q based systems as it gets far more points.

Nice 'air' OC you have there :D
And you most welcome to the team (not like we're going to stop anyone ;)) . a quad could run upto four standard clients or see SirusB's sig for the SMP guide - that will really test our OC! prime is one thing that SMP client REALLY tests your stability :D

Welcome to the team :) 4 mins is very good, to give you an indication my sempron 3000+ is currently doing 40 mins a frame on a 500 point WU :/

I would suggest looking into running a couple of Linux VMWare instances. That is the best way of getting the highest PPD and isn't difficult to setup since there are guides around. See this thread for more info.

One question about the VMWare, is it not possible to create an image that we can download and use? I know that virutal machine images can get quite hefty but for what we want it shouldn't be that big. Also is it better to setup ubuntu server on VMWare rather than the desktop version, and if so what additional setup steps need to be taken?

EDIT: Since I only have 1868 points, should I be getting a parp? :/ Should only take you a few hours to stomp me which is depressing :/

hmm I keep getting an Early_Unit_End error when using the smp client any ideas?

Welcome to the team.

I used to run the gui client on a quad, but have changed to running two smp clients.
Now im watching the points just mount up.

You can download a pre-installed Ubuntu image from VMWare themselves here and here. But you're better installing a fresh version tbh.

And yip using the Server version is a bit better. Tho it's harder to fix any problems that you may come across, but a bit of Googling helps loads. The instructions in SirusB's guide are run from the command line anyway, so they are the exact same for the Server.

If it doesn't work then set everything to stock and see if it works.

But some people have no luck with the WinSMP client. I've never been able to run it.

nope same error, checked all the services it wants are running and get the same error at stock as well :(

what would you suggest instead the standard command line client?

cracking clocks indeed (trying all day to get mine stable @ 3.33ghz and though i had it till prime failed after 3.5hrs!!)

as said before dump the gui client for at least 2 win smp clients if not the linux clients.
good luck getting sorted.

You can run several standard clients on a Q6600 if you wish to. I think they use one core each.

hmm becomes a matter of noise control with my setup :) with the one client I am still idling along at a nice low RPM's on my fans hehe 2 or 3 and it might get a bit loud

No, they all use 4 cores, that's the idea of an SMP client. However, a single thread doesn't fully tax the core so you can install more clients :D

On Linux I believe 2 clients will use around 50-60%. 3 uses around 90% and 4 will use the full 100%. This will cause all the clients to slow down a bit, but 4 x 900 PPD is better than say 3 x 1000. :)
