its for a friend for gaming on

he will be playing crysis, cod4 and some other new titles
his budget is as close to 900 as i can get is there anything i can shave off her while still being able to play crysis well

I think that would work out at a similar price, as well as being quicker, and with a bigger display. The DVD writer that you have selected in there seems to be fine, most of them are pretty good anyway.
 
I would go for an intel board - P45 or X38/48 and defo go for ATI for the graphics. I would suggest looking at the Antec 300 aswell and maybe get a better cpu cooler like the TRUE or TT
 
as said really

tuniq tower cooler
4870 card
intel chipset (p45/ x38 if he might crossfire)
can probably shave a few quid off the dvd writer
replace HDD with a samsung F1 drive.

a gaming PC is better off with a dual core.
