Decided I would start folding today as my PC is always on and my Opty 170 could do with some work.

Got one instance of it running at the moment and I am able to play games still with no noticable impact on fps :)

So be prepared from a few nooby questions shortly, but the Sticky has been a huge help :p
 
Welcome to the team :)

People will be along shortly to tell you to try the WinSMP client to make use of both cores and get some silly points - these people are of course correct :D
I would stick as you are for now - at least finish the current WU so you can fully understand how much greater the points are for the SMP client once you switch :eek:

All these new members... and the output of the hardcore elite members has gotten insane over the past few weeks. The only way is up!
 
I too just have started :) I always leave my second rig on downloading/encoding and thought about running Folding but have put it off for ages, just downloaded and setup the client now.

Just a quick qs :p

What CPU usage should I set it to? I have it on about 10% atm which seems not to cripple my system, what does the average user set this to?


Sorry to jump in saves me starting a new thread :)

It should be fine set to 100%
Since it's run at the lowest priority possible (infact lower than you can set anything yourself in Windows IIRC) then it will always give up the CPU cycles when something else needs them.

If you are at all worried about running it at 100% then go for 95% or 90% but it really should be fine at 100%
 
Yes, set it to 100% as it will always let go of the CPU when almost any other process needs it (providing it hasnt crashed or something).

At 10% a work unit is going to take a looong time. :)
 
100% would be fine as long as you aren't having any temp. issues. You've got the visual client running, though - one of the console clients would be a more efficient option if you aren't bothered about the pretty pictures.

If you haven't got the window open displaying the graphics there really isn't much difference.

Where you gain with the console client is that it doesn't suffer with the few bugs the graphical client does and if run as a service it doesn't need anyone to be logged in.
