hi
i am a complete newbi and have just finished putting together my first build which i have always wanted to do, the dummies books were designed for me. i have just turned the power on and nothing has exploded, the green light on the motherboard comes on and all the fans are working. my monitor is plugged in and that's fine. i am at a loss what to do next during boot up it says no hard drive is detected, and there is not sound, if there is supposed to be at this stage.in what order do things come next. do i install the motherboard cd before the OS is installed. my system is as follows.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 LGA775 "Kentsfield" 2.66GHz (1066FSB) - OEM
Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express)
Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair VX 550W ATX Power Supply (CMPSU-550VXUK)
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS)
Pioneer DVR-216DBK 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
as far as the hard drive is concerned i have checked the 2 cables (power and data and i think they are in the right sockets (sata 1 and 2 ). can anyone advice me, bearing in mind the first couple of lines
thanks in advance

Which version of windows are you trying to install?

If it's windows XP it's possible that it requires the SATA drivers or it won't find the hard drive.

You need to change the boot priority in the BIOS. You need to make the dvd/cd rom drive the first bootable device (see mother board manual). Save changes and then reboot with your windows disc already in the drive. (what OS are you using?)

Once the OS is installed then you install motherboard software and drivers etc...

As it boots up again the windows cd should be accessed and then you just follow the instructions for installing windows to your system.

Before all this, however, i would sit in the BIOS for a few minutes and monitor your temps - check that everything is ok. You may need to load optimal/safe defaults too for the mobo to recognise your hardware.

Need more info on your BIOS setup really - i.e. has it recognised your hardware correctly - cpu, memory, hdd's etc. If it has install windows as above.

Good luck

I must stress again about the sitting in your BIOS for a while just to check that all your temps are ticking over nicely and that hardware has been identified correctly.

If it has and you temps are ok install away - but first change your boot priority to the cdrom as i described above - exit and save.

dumb question here i just hold one of the keys during start up to get into bios right

Yes, press the delete key as it boots up. (Manual)

I would take a break with a tea/beer and sit and flick through the manual for a while - it will guide you through the BIOS settings.

Thats probably good advice, just have a flick through the BIOS options, most of the time you wont need to change anything but the boot priority order.

Once you have it booting from the CD/DVD drive you can install the Windows. The windows install is usaully painless. Then instead of installing the mobo CD download the latest drivers from your motherboard or chipsets manufacturers site and install them as they will be more up to date

If you get drunk easily, this may not be the best of ideas xD You may somehow end up breaking your PC and wondering how the hell you did that in the morning.
