Installed WinXP with no issues whatsoever, it's all very easy to do and very simple. Managed to install some old games like The Neverhood, Hart of Darkness and Ace Ventura. I know this is not designed for games but some of them seem to work just fine.

I have also tried VirtualBox but there was some strange problem with mouse cursor movement which was very annoying.

I even installed Win98 for some fun but couldn't get SVGA to work so I was stuck with low res and 16 colours.

what kind of sadist are you?

did you install vmware tools? that should have a vga driver. i think windows98 is still supported??

i used to like virtualbox but the last time i tried it i was rewarded with a nice BSOD. :p but even when virtualbox is running fine, i find vmware is the more polished product.

I think I installed the Tools as well but I'm not sure what they do at all.

You should notice a massive difference with the virtualbox tools installed. Without them, you definitely know you're using a VM.

I prefer virtualbox, but it definitely has a few annoying problems.

VMware Workstation running Windows 2000 is my favourite method of doing something i need virtualized :)

shame it's so damn expensive!

Hi op, welcome to two years ago :D

In all seriousness though, it is awesome :)

If you have installed the tools correctly you should see a VM Ware logo in the bottom right of your screen near the clock of the VM you are looking at. Such a useful bit of software.

I'm using VirtualBox a lot at the moment, installing guest additions helps a great deal. But my major gripe is the performance of USB, it's really slow, occasionally locking up when trying to access a usb device.

I've never had that problem with usb devices locking up. The only problem I've had with usb is sometimes you might get "conflicts" when adding new usb devices but you can get around this by manually entering the usb filter info for the particular usb device you are using.

VMware player now allows VM tools to be downloaded and installed from within the player so there is no need to buy Workstation unless you intend to start a huge corporate IT project.

I installed VMware Player last night (the free version).

Been trying to install Fedora 13 x64 on it this evening, it installs fine, just after that nothing seems to work properly.

I get an error when trying to update saying something about there not being enough space in /boot, the gnome bar icons get placed strangely and VMware tools don't appear to be installed properly. Its all very strange.

Virtualisation as a technology is simply stunning.

I spend my days designing system side stuff (At the minute I'm working on a 200,000 seat messaging platform) and doing things like basic functional testing without virtualisation.... is painful.

Found some old Windows stuff kicking about on my Mac the other day - Windows 3.11 for the win :D

awesome! Talk about nostalgia! :D

Btw, you know the forum has built-in youtube embedding right? no need for an HTML embed when the forum can do it for you? :p

I was browsing OcUK on Win 3.11 when I spent 6 hours over night installing them it from floppies. How I wish I had the time to do things like that now.
